I find that hard to believe.

Elazarus Planning to go to this. Train is now costing 71quid return (goddamn rail fares going up!!!). Anyone know of any cheaper alternatives or a way of getting round the train fares to make them cheaper (ie. split ticketing)? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Tip for anyone planning to get train. Split the tickets... when buying a ticket from Reading to Newcastle, it quotes 77quid (with a railcard) but if you get a return to Kings Cross and a separate ticket from Kings Cross to Newcastle it works out at 57quid. How does this work???
Anyway, booked the train now, so... IN for this.

It's all to do with the way the ticket revenue is allocated between the different rail companies. If you buy a through ticket, the revenue is shared between all the different railway companies whose trains you might possibly use to make the journey, proportional to an annual survey of actual trips made. On the other hand if you buy tickets only valid on a specific route / specific train then the revenue all goes to the specific company whose train you are using, and they can yield manage to maximise their revenue whilst still giving you a cheaper ticket. Where you lose out is you haven't got the same level of flexibility - but for something like a football match where the timings are fixed and known in advance, that's not really a problem.

JayRoyal Couple of questions here:
First game of the season for me, I live in Darlington, so Its hard for me to get to the games. I'm taking a couple of my mates who are students with me (both support Liverpool but are well up for going along)
1. I'm a member, but they aren't, how will I book? Will we sell our allocation cause we could get them on the day I suppose.
2. When it says student discount, is that college or university, we're all at college (hence me not being able to afford to come down for games)
Thanks for the help

Student I believe is aged 17-21, any younger and you're classified as child (I THINK anyway).
I doubt we will sell all tickets. I'm not sure they will be available on the day though as this option isn't regularly available (is it?).

NORTHERN & SCOTLAND BRANCH -STAR Northern Royals began as the Yorkshire Royals in the 1995/6 season to cater for northern based fans. Renamed to reflect our wider membership the group has grown steadily to around 80 members.
Many of us meet up before local games and at the Mad Stad whenever possible, travelling to games together and enjoying the occasional social event. Phil Parkinson attended one of our evenings in his testimonial year and we often welcome fans from STAR coaches to our Buxton hotel venue.
For a number of years, we have arranged block seat bookings for home and away games, now including a "Northern Away Season Ticket". If you live in the north (or know someone who does), contact us at northern.royals@star-reading.org for more details.
