melonhead where it should have stayed anyway, until the deal was done

Why, that part of the forum is for rumours and speculation. This is neither. Brian confirmed we are trying to sign him, regardless if he joins or not, it is not speculation.

This part of the forum is for the team, which he isn't a part of. With the absence of a "Not a rumor but still wildly speculating about details" board, it would make more sense to leave it where it is until a signing is confirmed.

You're not the one who would have to deal with all the new threads that would still be started on the Team though, are you?

We are trying to sign Tom Rogic for the team. That's a fact; not rumour, gossip or speculation.

The agreement for Rogic to go to Reading, meanwhile, which appeared to be a done deal, has hit two problems, with the English side only willing to pay a certain amount upfront despite having agreed an in-principle figure overall.

Beggars belief that the club are trying to do this on what is believed to be a nominal fee of c£400k....are things really that bad that we don't have the ability to pay the full amount...would understand it on a big fee but £400k ??????

Of course we have the ability to pay the full amount. But just because we can doesn't mean we should if we don't think the deal is worth it.

That's like saying just because we can afford to buy someone who's worth £400k for a £1m we should do it.

Err no that isn't what I said ..I didn't say anything about paying over the odds .. I was saying that I didn't understand that on what could be considered a low value deal, we decide not to pay thenfull amount, and instead put the deal in jeopardy.....irrespective of Rogic not wanting to join the club, this is more about risking deals because if pettiness on small value transfers ...which is the scheme of things is what this is ....

We don't know that the fee is £400k though. It could be double that or more.

its just alot of money.
you may want us to spend more, on multiple players
other people may spend more, on multiple players.
but its still alot of money.
and you shouldnt really manage a business by just saying things like "im not sure its worth it, but what the oxf*rd, 400k isnt alot of money, lets just do it regardless of the risk, and chance making it back"

And therein lies the problem.

Most fail to recognise that Reading FC is a business, and that the rules of rationality and financial prudence do not apply to them.

We wouldn't go shopping for a new sofa, pick one we like, and then hand over the credit card without first looking at the price tag and doing a mini cost-benefit analysis in our heads, likewise nor will Reading when it comes to signing a new player.

Most Reading fans, particularly those who frequent this board, will be relatively intelligent people who manage their finances in a way that ensures they will survive the next few years. However they expect Reading to act in a different way to this? They expect those who run Reading to put the business in an unnecessarily risky position and probably hinder the club's long term prospects in a most likely fruitless attempt to compete in the short run?

I don't get it.

400k Represents less than 1% of our turnover and considerably less than was spent on Summer signings.

So in the context of a scrag-end Permiership club then yes.

Anyway - according to the Chronic it looks as if he's set to sign.

OMG!, I'm on permanent repeat here, but people just keep doing it again and again.

THE TRANSFER FEE IS IRRELEVANT. WAGES ARE THE ISSUE!

So a player bought for £4k, £40k, £400K or £4M will still need PL-level wages paid. And don't expect anyone to accept less than £15k a week from a PL team - so that "minimal" £400k has turned into £3.1M over their 4 year contract. And if they turn out to be any good they'll be knocking on the door demanding much more than that £15k a week ...

Agram Ladies/Gents,

I'm from Australia and have been reading this thread and decided to clear up a few things about Rogic.

Firstly, the standard of the A-League is an interestring one and it's quite difficult to make a comparison to where it would sit amongst the English Football League structure.

Clubs like Brisbane and Melbourne play the best football in the league by far, much better than what I watched living in England for 2 and a half years from any bottom Championship/League One clubs. However, you also have clubs such as Perth and Wellington who sit deep are prone to the odd long-ball, horrible to watch.

Another thing is that due to each club being imposed with a salary cap, its hard for the bigger clubs such as Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane to really go after good players in the transfer market, meaning that there is sometimes a big discrepancy in quality within clubs themselves. I'll use Sydney as an example - they have Alessandro Del Piero - however apart from Jason Culina (ex-PSV) and Brett Emerton (ex-Blackburn) the players around him are either coming out of the State Leagues (lower divisions) or just solid A-League players who obviously aren't on his level.

In terms of Rogic, he plays for the club that tops the league at current and has been by far their best player. He suffers a bit from the 'Del Piero syndrome' in that technically/tactically he is that far ahead of his peers that he is always one step ahead in terms of passing and receiving he becomes frustrated.

Now, in terms of his move to Reading, I don't think people here in Australia are saying that the is too good for you. Most of the conversation has been that if he were to move to there the style of football that usually comes along with a relegation battle wouldn't suit him at all, which in turn would have a negative effect on your own hopes to survive.

What I mean by it not suiting him is that he isn't a ball-winning midfielder who is going to give you 90 minutes of graft. Rogic has had a mostly futsal upbringing (only started playing the outdoor form of the game properly 3-4 years ago) and relies solely on his technical ability. Even here in the A-League he struggles to play out 90 minutes, but the 70-odd he generally plays are 70 minutes of quality. His ability to play out 90 will come in time, but he isn't ready for that yet, particularly in the Prem.

What's more is that IF Reading are to go down, the Championship would probably be worse for him at this stage of his career. Personally I think his first move to Europe should be in the Eredivisie/Bundesliga, where he can get the mix of 'technical football' with the touch of physicality, then if he wants (or is good enough) go to the Prem.

Anyway, good luck and hope you lads manage to stay up :)

I don't want to sound rude, but look at Gylfi Sigurdsson, we got him at 16 and look what we did to him?!?!?!!?!?!? Ruined his career completely let lower league players kick lumps out of him and where is he now?!?!!??!

I guess you watch a lot of championship and lower league football over in Australia, as you all seem to know what it's like!

If he does come he won't be put in the first team he'll be seen as one for the future and maybe even loaned out to have lumps kicked out him.

It doesn't matter how big it is, you pay what it's worth and not more. Pay of over the odds on even just upfront in lots of little transfers and it adds up.

Looks like he has turned us down then. We need to be looking at spending some money on an established player that can create, from abroad or England. Crucial if we are going to use 4-5-1
