Only a good decision by the club if they do something PDQ about getting someone considerably better. What chances that?

I do, however, think it likely that people are misinterpreting what may have been said to him. I suspect it is most likely that he has been told the club won't stand in his way if he wants to leave and another club comes in for him. That's different from saying they want him out asap.

The latter is almost exactly what McDermott has just told Dellor that he told Tabb.

What I assume is happening going but what everyone is saying that McDermott said (I.e. "no longer needed" or "wanted"), is that we are trying to get him to hand in a transfer request.

If he were to do that, then Reading would not have to pay out his contract. It would give Reading a slightly larger budget, and free up space in our 25.

Tabb has always given his all for RFC, but I can sort of understand this decision on a long term basis as we need to improve quality if now (or in the future) we are serious about being a fixture in this division.

I certainly hope he gets a good club. I thought he sounded gutted in the interview - although he was being fantastically positive which is what is so great about this player. He deserves to get a good contract somewhere.

Yeah, the Akpan signing only makes sense if Tabb leaves.

Best of luck to him, he's capable of starting for a lot of Championship clubs, and he could even have a role at one of the Premiership clubs.

Two sides to every story. Is it fair to keep Tabb on the basis of 'you'll do when we've got nothing better'. Leigertwood fulfills a different role in the squad and if the Carrico move works out, he'll be on his way, no doubt. Tabb's time to move on has come and I think it's the right thing for everyone. We need to evolve our squad and this is the first step.

I as most fans are disapointed by this but lets look at the facts.

In the championship he was a bit part player who when called upon gave his all, but not a regular.
This season he has not set the world alight but has not let himself down either when filling in for Jem.
He is out of contract in June.
As a club we wish to progress, that means getting better players and not hoarding them in the reserves as we can only have 25 in the squad over 21 years old (this also goes for Gunnarson, should let his squad position go if another player comes in and stick to the mentoring/coaching)
With his recent performances his stock will be higher than it has been in the last 2-3 years
He is out of contract at the end of the season and along with many other players will be looking for a club

With all this in mind the club have done the best by him in letting him and his advisor know he is available now so he is more likely to get a move with a decent contract to a club in the upper end of the championship, it does not mean they want him out now and if he doesnt move in the window I am sure he will feature again for the club before the season end.

Whilst I'm sad at this news, as Tabb has been excellent this season (and his attitude has been bang on ever since he came here), I find it surprising what short memories some fans have, by saying that it's Ledge we should be telling this to. This is the same guy, who in two years here, helped turn us into beaten play off finalists and Championship winners. In many eyes, he's been our most consistently good performer over those two years. He's had a bad couple of months since mid-November, but if we were to go down, he would be vital for us.

He's played well beyond his level this season so the timing is a bit harsh, but ultimately he's not good enough. Not fussed at all he's off - can never fault his effort and seems like a genuinely nice bloke, but no room for sentiment when you're trying to improve your team.

I think this is a disgusting decision made by the club, Tabb if we do go down would be vital for us next season. He should be kept on and see what happens at the end of the season. If we go down, give him a new contract. If we stay up fair enough but let Jay go where he wants to.

As for Legs... Yes I get your point but on work ethic and performance this season mind Legs age, it should be he that is allowed to leave, although he will always be remembered here

I actually think almost exactly the opposite as it goes...

If we were to go down I think there would be even less reason to retain Tabb. His lack of power and stature is absolutely exposed in the championship as refs let the game get far more physical. That's one of the reasons that Legs was so effective for us at that level, his slower footballing speed of thought was more than made up for by his presence and power. Tabb conversely has stepped up better this year due to that increased protection.

You get the sense he is a good pro, but if we are to advance as a side then improving the standard of a squad is a must. This means former first teamers becoming squad players (legs for example) and former squad players moving on to new homes.
