Don't think he was really in the game today but hardly a surprise. Far too early to judge anything yet.

Poor sod must have freaked out seeing snow today. Give him a break!

Arnie_Pie BBCRB were absolutely slating him. Said it was the single worst debut ever for Reading. I have never heard to much contempt and disgust listening to the commentary today.

Who cares what that oxf*rd Tim Dellor says, he's as thick as a whale sandwich.

Well don't let that misguide you. As stated before, it was really only his positioning. Plenty of quality.

It was his positioning, his passing, his control, and his air shot outside the box.

Terrible player from today's shambles

They were right. That was as embarrassing a debut as I've ever seen. I don't think any one is going to judge him as a footballer against it but he looks weeks away from being a valuable part of the team.

juanpablo he was terrible tracking runners from midfield today

cant judge him on a debut when he's not match fit though....

Was the first goal an example ? Was that Carico ?

I actually thought he was pretty good, breaking up play nicely and laying it off simple. But obviously I was wrong.

I'm with you. Not great by any means, and some real face palm moments, but showed enough to me that when he gets up to speed he'll be a vast improvement on Legs.

Yes, he was clearly knackered by that point. Which isn't encouraging given it was inside 20 minutes. Either that or slower than Pearce.

I wouldn't go as far as good Wiz / Gav, but I'd say he showed plenty of promise if he can get up to speed.

1st goal he let his man just run past him. He looked utterly unfit and off the pace. It's far too early to judge him.

That was kinda my point. I just made it badly. He made some totally terrible errors, but still looked (to me) that once he gets to grips with his fitness and gets used to the team he'll be absolutely fine.

here's hoping. He played for Sporting Lisbon so he must have something about him.

Shambolic debut but let's put it down to fitness. Wasn't in the game at all but he'll get better.

I didn't think he was too bad, no worse than the rest of the team were playing at that point. Think the main thing was his wayward passing but you can put that down to a complete change in footballing style, he was making them as if we were a free flowing Portuguese team or someone in the vein of Swansea and well you could see what he was trying to do but the rest of the players didn't make the runs that he's used to, instead he has to learn to hoof. All in all will be a great player for us given time though but needs to be given time to adapt. :)

TBF, Williams and Gooding also acknowledged that it wasn't his fault for being picked to start in his first ever PL game after just six minutes of proper competitive football this season! As they said, if you are offered the chance to play after a season of injury and not playing, you are not likely to say no! (Imagine a Guthrie situation so soon after signing?!!) A strange and somewhat desperate selection from McDermott, given how cautious he normally is about putting new players straight into the team.

I thought you could see the good and the bad in that debut.

He linked up well with Guthrie and Karacan, some nice simple passes that just kept us ticking over in possession nicely. In fact yesterday during the first half was the first time I can remember us keeping possession for a sustained period this season. Not a lot of penetration, but we looked like a footballing side at last. No question Carrico played his part in that.

On the negative side, he did look horribly out of touch, which was to be expected really. He also didn't seem to grasp where he should have been positioning himself in defence, He kept getting too high up the pitch and not covering the hole that the WBA attacking mid was sitting in. That will come with time in training and on the pitch for us.

On the whole I thought it was a promising debut if only for the positives on display. Certainly nowhere near the worst debut I have ever seen. I think he will grow to be quite important to us if a passing 4-5-1 formation is to be our future.

Dont know how it can be called embarassing :o

He won a few tackles by sprinting to shut people down, and most the time he had it he just laid a nice simple pass to somebody. Couple of awkward moments and looked unfit. But he did ok.

Reminded me a bit of Ledge's debut, albeit he managed to last the whole game. Confident he'll get better with fitness.

Guthrie was the biggest winner of the Carico start in my opinion.

Suddenly having another hyped midfielder seemed to take all the pressure off poor Guthrie and we saw what he is truly capable of. Further more when he saw that Carico was actually having a embarrassing game he came in a couple of times and helped him out, then went from strength to strength himself and continued to boss the game.

As Brian says, Carico will be fine. Give the lad some time. I am excited by the prospect of Brian working on him.

A side note: a bit disappointed by Carico telling BBCRB he came off because they needed a different game plan, not even coming close to admitting he was horrific. Typically Portuguese to talk shit and never admit weakness I know, but come on that was an embarrassment. Any other player asked about the subbing would surely put their hands up and say "yeah I don't think I was on top of my game today as I'm not match fit so it was the right decision but I'll get fit etc" but oh no Carico had the nerve to make out like he was awesome, only came off for tactical reasons and expects to start our next match!!??

Anyone else think this was odd?

Good comparison that.
