How do you think our squad is looking now on paper?

by bracksroyal10 » 15 Jan 2013 12:48

Obviously there is another fifteen or so days left until there is no going back with our transfer dealings:
Ins:
Akpan
Carrico
Kelly

Potentially:
Sunzu

How do you think we have done so far with our dealings and assuming we are only going to add one or two more in do you think it is going to be enough to make us competitive in this relegation battle? Obviously only Carrico has really been tried and tested but do you think as a team we finally look solid at the back on paper or do we still look like we are going to be leaking goals? Understand there will only be a selection of fans who will have knowledge on players such as Akpan, Carrico and Sunzu.

Are we lacking experience still despite the addition of Kelly or do fans feel a little more confident then they did prior to January? We have got ourselves right back in it but does this squad have the potential to consistently deliver with solid and assured performances not just at home but away to secure points that will prove vital towards the end of the season.

Finally are there any gambles in terms of spending structure people feel we should be taking as a club that we aren't at the minute in order to survive?

A lot stronger than it did when we went up. Is it enough though? With a more attacking style I might feel a little more confident, but can understand the 4-5-1 (for now).

It will be toilet paper unless we sign some attacking talent… fingers crossed

So far: Enthused by Carrico, consider Kelly a sensible signing and intrigued as to how Akpan will develop. A little confused by the saga with Sunzu, but I think we may wait until the summer to bring him in, even if we do a deal for him this month. I'm guessing that he's a replacement for Pearce anyway.

Would like to see: Another attacking option come in somewhere, just to freshen things up a bit. In an ideal world, a pacy left-back, but I just don't see that happening until the summer.

Outgoings: Gutted to see Tabb go, but it's the right decision. Church has fallen down the pecking order, so understandable if he moves on.

Gamble: Only if it's calculated and we aren't just throwing money at a lost cause. Fulfilling that with the right player is incredibly difficult, so I don't see us making a 'meltdown' signing this window.

Overall, I think we've done OK with our business in this window so far. I'd give us 7/10 at the moment, moving up to an 8 or 9 if we bring in someone who excites and would add another dimension in attack.

Not very well.

Weakest squad in the division supplemented with a Crawley player, a Fulham sub and a Portuguese bloke. More/better signings please. And quickly.

I think all the signings we have made have potential to make us stronger but they are definitely all gambles. I think Carrico and Akpan really do have potential to succeed at this level. Kelly can play at this level but not sure if he will necessarily excell.

I don't need a right back to excel - I'll just be happy if he does his job competently!

Agreed doesn't need to do anything spectacular just to be solid and stubborn week in week out. Stoke's defenders don't really do anything exceptional and out of the ordinary but they are still hard as nails and take no cr*p off anyone. If we can build our defence in a similar way physically I think we will be fine. Kelly, Pearce, Morrison and a new left back have the potential to be this.

On what basis do you say that about Akpan?

And whilst Carrico on paper looks the more likely to make it, I'm not sure. Even if he does, I doubt we will see much from him this season although I would be exceptionally happy to be proven wrong.

Used to live near Crawley so some mates are fans and have said he is a great prospect also saw two games last season and he was very good. Admittedly this isn't that extensive a knowledge of him but from what I have seen/heard I think he has the potential to succeed at this level.

Difficult to gauge how good a player truly is when they're playing piss poor opposition week in-week out.

its a gradual sensible evolution, you grow and strengthen the squad a little bit each window, you gradually increase the quality of your players, and fill gaps as they arise.

does that make us more likely to stay up? yes
is it likely that we stay up? no

To answer the question, better than it did in December but we still need an attacking midfielder who will be able to get forward and support Pog in a similar way to the role that Morrison did for Lukaku on Saturday.

Infact if we could get Morrisson in I would be a very happy bunny indeed but we are talking a mega transfer fee (for us) and WCBAP - still we can dream

+1 totally agree; need someone who can hold the ball up, take on players and make some good forward play (and ideally also score some goals). On Saturday, it was so clear that there was no-one in the team apart from the Pog who you'd expect to score goals.

Think it looks thread bare quality wise. At least QPR (smaller club) are giving it a go!

Our attitude seems to be we are down already. Get in staff for next season and try to get about 30
Points so not so embarassing.

Kelly usedul rest are potential and will make little difference
Now.

Disapppointing. AZ spend!

The squad is slightly better with the new additions, but still not good enough to stay in the Prem...on paper anyway.
