Noel Hunt - Contract

by ddetisi » 16 Jan 2013 11:46

Not been much talk of Noel, with the various superstar strikers we are meant to be signing. I think he's tried really hard to be an active member of the club and the community and is one that enjoys the Reading way. Pitched in a good amount of goals too.

If we do end up bringing in another forward with his Contract is up at the end of the season - Renew or not to Renew?

Provides excellent support to our strikers at Championship level and what he had appeared in the Premier League so far, good at hold up and has a history of making our other strikers appear better than they may actually appear when he supports them. Brings a lot to the club behind the scenes too by way of atmosphere, although sentiment isn't a reason to retain.

Roberts must be out the door this season. I can see Noel being given two, tops, but could understand if he left (I'd be disappointed).

This

Unless we have some better option walking through that door, he's a solid Championship contributor and useful squad player at this level.

We'll need him as back-up, especially with Church on the way out and Roberts nearing retirement. Also if we do go down bids may come in for Le Fondre, Pog and anyone else we sign this month. He should stick around.

Clearly it would depend who we are looking to bring in up front.

Assuming a decent replacement I would be inclined to let Mr Hunt leave at the end of his contract. If the club have no intention of bringing someone else in then obviously that would change. I would hope we would look to continually improve though. Turn your first teamers into squad players and your squad players moved on is how you steadily improve in my opinion.

The only way I'd keep Hunt is if we don't keep Roberts on, and even then I'd only like to see a one-year deal with perhaps the option of a second year. He shouldn't be more than 4th choice next season, and I'd prefer to see Samuel get that role myself.

Assuming we get relegated, we will need more quality than Hunt to have a chance of promotion again.

Hasn't had an injury for at least 18 months.

Whack on a year. Good squad player, absolute terrier, annoys the heck out of centre backs, wins an outrageous number of flick ons.

Does a ton of good work in the community too. Yeah I know, not footballing reasons...

Injured far less than some would think/claim.

A player still of considerable value to us and, should we no longer want him, great value to many other teams. So give him a decent contract and sell him at a later stage if we are still in the PL and feel we need to replace him with someone better.

Said pretty much this on another thread, but lets face it, Church is on his way out. And there's not much point in renewing the contract of someone fast approaching their mid-30s, with injury worries, who hasn't scored a goal in his last 21 PL appearances. So unless you want to go into the summer with a starting point of trying to sign at least 2 new strikers, just to bring us up to 4 in total, it's absolutely sensible to try and keep Hunt.

He's likely to be happier than most new signings just knocking about the squad as back-up. And if we're bringing in strikers, they really need to be of the quality of Pog or better. Which ain't cheap. And young prospects aren't a great bet because they need to be playing, not rotting in arse end of the 25 occasionally getting on the bench.

I believe he loves playing for the club. He gives everything, and I enjoy watching him play. In the Championship he's a great striker. If we stay up, he's a good squad player - who can make a difference. Keep him, 2 year contract. As previous people have said, Church is on his way out, and Roberts is injured - set to retire? Can't imagine him going to be honest.
