royaldownunder He may have had success playing in Russia but surely even their top clubs have to be championship/ league one level at best.

I'm not sure I would break the bank for him, but if there was a chance why not? I watched the game yesterday and to be honest his whole demeanour said 'I'm not really interested, I'm off in the summer, I'm only on the bench cos others are unfit or unavailable.' I don't know if we could reinvigorate his spark or not. from what others have said about his performances for Russia, he couldn't have lost the skill etc etc, it would just seem that what he has lost is interest.

So many people seem to think it's more important to have a name than an effective player. Insecurity?

That makes no sense.

Hulk, Witsel, Rondón, Dzagoev, Honda, Doumbia, Akinfeev are all top class players, among many others. Many of their teams (though not this year so far) do alright in Europe.

e.g. Stephen Kelly being exactly the type of signing we needed.

oh right, you know for a fact he wont be effective?

What's the alternative get some tried and tested lower league players? Because as we have seen with our own signings that can be hit and miss.
What is a fact, Andrei Arsharvin has been more effective at top levels of the game than any other player in our squad. Can he get it back, will he be effective for us? Who knows, imo its worth the gamble

It's one thing to "do alright" in europe, in terms of actual success in the champions league, Russian clubs are way below the Spanish, Italian, English, German, Dutch, Portuguese, French, Scottish… Even Romanian and Yugoslavian Teams have had more success than Russian. Many Championship sides could "do alright" in Europe if they got an easy draw, though lack the ability to ever really compete (Millwall 2005).

My point was, (though admittedly a little exaggerated) is that you can't compare the standard in the Russian Leagues with the Prem, and just because Arsharvin is doing OK there, doesn't mean he's a safe bet for the prem.

While I see your point I think you have very much over exaggerated, I'm pretty sure the top two or three sides in russia would wipe the floor with us and the rest of the bottom 6-7 prem clubs

Anji and Zenit could sit easily mid-upper mid Premier League table with the quality of players they have.

I didn't see the whole Arse game yesterday, but from the snippets I saw he looked gash. Who would I rather come on to support or replace The Pog? ALF of Arseshaving?

Don't need him.

Yes I concede I made a rather flippant comment ;) their top 2/3 sides may well be better than the bottom few Prem teams...
Arsharvin's success in Russia was still playing in a league with a much lower standard than the prem, so I'm still not convinced he's worth a gamble on anything more than a loan till the end of season.

Seen the clip, he also mentioned that we haven't spent big money in the time hes been here, or even the last 12 years but if the right player comes along then the chairman has to think about it. We will spend big on the right players.

Im not giving up hope on this move just yet as that last bit seemed to hint the move is too expensive, but Anton will have a look. Thats what I got from it anyway.
