Really?

Seems to me he is saying that he doesn't think we are going to get enough wins against the lesser sides to stay up, and as such might need a freak win, like Norwich or QPR have achieved.

Might not fit Woodcote's opinion, but it's not stupid.

Nope, he said we won't survive unless we beat one of the bigger clubs, absolute nonsense

*unless of course he's being a self-loathing Reading fan who thinks everyone is bigger than us and therefore bigger clubs can include QPR, Wigan and Southampton etc, in which case he's still stupid but for a different reason

Ian Royal You've got to admit, the similarity is uncanny.

One season spent almost entirely outside the relegation zone, one season spent almost entirely within it...?

Plot our way to Survival :)

by Reading4eva » 23 Jan 2013 13:24

What do you think we'll need to do to save ourselves.

We'll draw against Stoke (there wobbling a little), beat Everton and West Ham (as we are obviously there bogey team) and might get something against Norwich and Fulham. If you presume, we draw against the final two at worst, that would be 9 points in the bag. That puts us on 28 points. Beat 3 of Southampton, Villa, Wigan, QPR and Sunderland at home, and we are home and dry.

Cue epic party at Upton Park

Easy

If we just avoid losing every game until the end we should be OK. Also we should try and score more goals too.

Depends how you define bigger. Saints have a bigger fanbase. They have a much bigger history. QPR have a bigger history. QPR have more money.

We've been more successful than either for close to a decade. So currently, I'd say we're pretty much on a par with them, if not slightly "bigger" in the now.

i reckon size of club is mixture of silverware, years in the top flight, fan base, stadium, spending, setc
silverware being the ost important for me(while agreeing that both become less and less important the longer ago it was)

saints:
im not sure two recent championship wins and vast majority of years in the lower leagues outweighs years in the top flight, 5 major cup finals, one win, and a runners up top flight finish. not for me any way. their stadium is bigger, they spent longer in the top flight up until pretty recently, bigger fan base etc

QPR:
top fligh runners up, twice 2nd tier champions, twice runners up, 3 major cup finals, 1 win. ok their stadium is smaller, and they cant fill it, but id imagine they have more followers than we have regardless.

yes we are moving up on them in many ways. but imnot sure we eclipse them by any means

not that id swap for all the tea in china of course

In terms of overall success, yes I agree both are "bigger". In terms of size as came up here, so how we should expect to perform against them this season, then both are very much at best our peers and not "bigger" than us. (ancient) Silverware and fanbase are pretty irrelevant to that.

But in context brendy, it was about us having to beat a big club to stay up. That clearly doesn't include those teams. It's all about context.

context is quite clear in the quoted line where he says youd have to be self loathing fan who thinks everyone is bigger than us, to think those two clubs were bigger than us

i agree totally with his statement that in order to stay up we dont have to beat one of the bigger clubs(by which i assume he meant one of the big prem teams, not just a club wot is bigger than us) to stay up

Stop it. I don't want the hope only to have it dashed again. I'm now thinking "better odds then we had of finishing top last season with 19 to go." STOP GIVING ME FALSE HOPE!

I want us to have a right good go until the bitter end. The one game I really want to win is QPR. Dragging those cnuts down with us would actually give me quite a lot of comfort!
