Niko Lewington may have been at the Mad Stad tonight for Cahill, Terry, Lamps etc., but Alfie surely stole the show.

Call up status: IMMINENT

Until he can produce that for for the entire 90 minutes, then I doubt it. Whenever he has started he has not had the same impact.

He is better than a goal every 180 minutes when starting in the prem, and a goal every two games
is usually the benchmark for a very good striker.

Starts

90 1 Stoke
90 0 Sunderland
90 0 WBA
81 2 Everton
90 0 Wigan
90 0 Villa
90 1 Man Utd
90 0 Saints

711 Minutes, 4 Goals and those in a struggling, relegation-threatened side with little creativity.

Brian was also asked about Adam Le Fondre playing for England, and said he spoke to assistant boss Ray Lewington today.

The boss commented, "I spoke to Ray this morning, he was at the game last night and I don't see any reason why Adam Le Fondre can't play for his country.

"He finishes when he gets a chance. He couldn't have been under any more pressure there but he produced. I'm not saying he can only score from the bench, I would never ever say that.

"I'm not picking Roy Hodgson's team, but I would say Alfie could score for England from the bench or score for any team. His record is phenomenal."

G'La Where do you think Le Fondre stands in the England Selection scheme of things? Rooney, Welbeck, Defoe and Sturridge perhaps ahead of him at the moment???

Perhaps? Would say they're all miles ahead of him tbh.

He's competing with the likes of Holt, Lambert and Hooper for a spot in case one of those loses form or gets injured.

Oh, and Crouch.

I forgot Walcott. Clearly ahead of Le Fondre.

Graham in with a shout too.

Amazing what a big turn around England's striking options have had in the past 12 months. Defoe has re-found form, Sturridge and Walcott are playing centrally, Lambert, Le Fondre and Hooper emerging as genuine options.

Not advocating a place for Le Fondre particularly, but Welbeck's inclusion at the moment is fairly baffling.

We might be unfashionable Reading, in England International selection circles, but quite simply if he keeps on scoring then he will have to be considered, he has scored regularly whatever division he has been in also his goals arn't 2 yard tap ins, in particular his winner at Newcastle and his 2 against Chelsea were as good as you will see, second highest Englishman in the Premiership scoring charts, his record speeks for itself. Additionally of course England arn't exactly overflowing with instinctive goalscorers.

There are arguments that Lambert and Holt, from the lower league originality ilk, are considered to be ahead of him, but they are a different type of smash and grab strikers, Le Fondre is a sniffer, looking for the loose ball around the penalty area, AND A complete striker, right or left foot, and a good header of the ball.

Can he cut it at an international level ? well many doubted he would be any good at Premiership level and he is soundly putting that one to bed, so come on Roy give the lad a chance, you have absolutely nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

No disrespect to Reading but our squad is not great, however Alf is still banging them in.

Throw him in a team that will create more chances he could get even more.

Hodgson, who I rate highly, usually will give players a chance who are on form at that present time. ALF is on form. He hasn't played many games from the start but I don't see why, on current form, he wouldn't get a call up in a friendly. He is certainly down the pecking order from Rooney, Wellbeck, Defoe, Sturridge etc but not that far behind the next crop of fringe players

As soon as we signed Le Fondre, I knew he would awsome for us. Prolific. A predator in front of goal. Love the guy to bits. Will he marry me?

RFC have more bollocks than England, so no, I wouldn't expect a call up.

Sadly Snowball 2 of those were penalties.

TBF he did win the one against Everton, though it was hardly a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Sadly I'd suggest a return of 2 goals from open play in eight starts isn't England standard especially if he wants to be a starter. Unfortunately he also isn't as effective outside and around the box as say a Shane Long (;)) who was able to keep his place despite similar goalscoring problems at the start of the 10/11 season due to the fact he was holding the ball up well and contributing lots to winning pens, tiring defenders etc.

Whether he'd be more effective in a team that creates more I'm unsure, though evidence certainly suggests if you give him chances he'll score!

That being said I see no harm in Hodgson putting him in a squad to throw on for 15 minutes if they need a goal as his record from the bench is superb. I'd much rather have Le Fondre in the squad than the 'Jermaine Jenas/Michael Carrick' midfielder that just sits in the 23 and gets nowhere near the pitch.

Great finisher but he is not a complete striker by any means. That's not an insult its just the type of player he is. Rooney is a complete striker, RVP is a complete striker but walcott is not. Different types of strikers as with ALF, great player, great finisher but not a complete striker

Deserves to be either ALFie or Lambert after how they've both played so far this season compared to Carroll
