Wouldn't be a problem as Robbie Fowler's a free agent, so we could get him in even after the window slams shut.

HoneyRoastHoax http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2271204/ADRIAN-DURHAM-COLUMN-The-snobs-stop-Le-Fondre-playing-England--Spurs-signed-paperboy--And-Wengers-French-farce-run-run-West-End.html

Three hours after Reading came from two goals down to draw with the European champions, their manager Brian McDermott sent me a text declaring that Adam Le Fondre can play international football.

'He could come off the bench for England, no problem,' he said.

Sadly there are too many football snobs out there who would recoil in horror at the thought of a player who turned out for Stockport and Rochdale wearing the Three Lions of England.

Personally I love that Reading scout the lower leagues and pick up players.
Le Fondre scored a hat-trick in a trial game with Manchester United as a youngster and was then told he was too lazy and wouldn’t be taken on at Old Trafford. But he fought back by dropping down to the lower leagues and banged in goals and earned his move.

Both of Le Fondre’s goals against Chelsea were set up by Hope Akpan, the most recent arrival at the Madejski Stadium.

Last month he was playing for Crawley Town in League One, until Reading paid £350,000 to take him to the top flight. McDermott says that’s a bargain.

Le Fondre cost even less - £300,000 - and his goalscoring record is amazing, even in the Premier League. And they say English players are expensive.

There are plenty more players down in the lower leagues who are good enough, if Premier League clubs can be bothered to look for them.

McDermott used to be a scout and says it’s the perfect grounding for a manager. He also says his top scorer could play for England. I can’t disagree.

I remember when Liverpool used to get players from the lower leagues.

Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence spring to mind.

Good point. anyone have a list?

Tony Book, wasn't he about 30, ended up captaining Man City?

John Aldiridge, South Liverpool, Newport County, that team up the A34, then Liverpool and Ireland.

Stuart Pearce?

Do Longy and Doyley count? Kitson, Shorey, SHunt?

From NON-League

Les Ferdinand - Southall, Hayes then QPR

Stan Collymore, non-league Stafford, Palace, Southend, eventually Liverpool

Kevin Phillips, rejected by Saints, went and played for Baldock Town, won the Golden Boot for Sunderland in the Prem.

Kerry Dixon?

Alan Pardew didn't get picked up until he was 25, eventually played in the top dvision for Palace ad score the winner in the FA Cup Final against Man U

Tony Book was 30 when he went into the league for the first time (Plymouth) 32 when he went to Man City

Pearce played 5 years as a non-league fullback before going first to Coventry, then Forest

Grant Holt is best example of this in recent years. Consistently scored goals in the lower two leagues but only Norwich took a chance on him for 400K.

My bad. He scored the winning goal in the 4-3 SEMI-final win of Liverpool

They lost the final
