I might be in the minority but I don't want Alfie to get a call up. Yes it would be great for him and exposure for us, but look what happened with Shorey. Shorey was a hard-working down to earth lad who went into the England team and got his head turned by all the high earning egos, and he wasn't the same after that. He felt he outgrew Reading, and I fear the same would happen with Alfie, especially when successful English strikers are always in great demand.

If we went down and he was capped, we would find it very hard to keep him here next season. Of course, my opinion would change if we stayed up and we could reward him with a bumper new deal to fend off a lot of the bigger clubs interest.

paultheroyal Defoe no doubt out the England game, who gets the call? Lambert, Le Fondre, other?

Carroll, probably. :|

Deserves to be either ALFie or Lambert after how they've both played so far this season compared to Carroll

Yeah, but it is England. Pick the same players year after year and wonder why it didn't work out this time. You'd have to think logically to pick ALF or Lambert. They all talk the same garbage about bringing in new players, but they don't.

It should be ALF, as it's Defoe to be replaced (probably). You would never have the two of them in the same squad, as they are too similar. Defoe is a better version of ALF, but if he is not there then ALF is the nearest equivalent.

An England call-up should surely boost his value for when he eventually gets sold to Manchester United as Van Persie's replacement.

ALF and Lambert to come in then. Both to be sent on in the last 15 - 20 if we are chasing the game.

Whilst I really rate ALF and he's doing well at the moment, I think it says more about England's dearth of proven international quality strikers that a player who was playing in League Two as recently as last season is being talked about for a cap. No matter how good his form has been over the last few games.

If he can keep performing I think he'll deserve a shot at a cap, but not yet.

Yeah that's the reality but what about the dream?
Defoe and Sturridge both doubtful, Roy, get another shirt printed up!

Darren Bent or somebody will get called up and England will just play 1 up top. ALF or Lambert are nowhere near the England squad. Remember Dave Kitson in 07/08? Finished as the top English goal scorer that season and wasn't even mentioned in the same sentence as England.

It's a pointless friendly, Hodgson should be looking at fringe players in the main. Even if it's no more than giving them a feel for joining up with the squad and watching from the bench. Lambert and Le Fondre should at least be considered - although my guess is it'll be Carroll straight back in,

Exactly! Just got to accept that England only play the tried, tested and FAILED players every time!

Lambert is 31 so might not get a cap now. If Alf was playing (and scoring) like he is but rather at Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs etc it would be a definite possibility, just can't see it happening at the moment though.

There really is a terrible shortage of English strikers around.
Welbeck and Alf don't play much club football and Sturridge and Carroll have been out for some time for different reasons.
I think Alf needs to play more before he will be considered-he has a good enough touch,as Shorey had,to be considered for International football-but previous managers picked Ricketts,Nugent,Carlton Cole and Bothroyd so he does have a chance and good luck to him if it happens.
Kerry Dixon was capped only after he left us,Kitson should have been called up and it would be great for Alf if he got the call.

To be fair Kerry played with us between 1980-83 - not the most salubrious time in our history. It's hardly surprising as a 3rd tier player he wasn't picked for Englan Duty.

Had a quick look at Alfie's England chances, short and long term, as well as the rest of our English eligable crop.

G'La Where do you think Le Fondre stands in the England Selection scheme of things? Rooney, Welbeck, Defoe and Sturridge perhaps ahead of him at the moment???

Kevin Davies got a call up, so anything is possible.

think this will also be effecting Peare's decision to sign a new contract as well. Will certainly pushed up his expectations on wages.

I actually think Alfie has a great personality. Shorey barely played for orient before his non stop success with us, but Alfies got the realism Rochdale and Stockport gives you. I think its in our interests for him to win a cap - we can say to the likes of Pearce, pledge your future to Reading and the skys the limit.

Also, the "secret footballer" describes how a colleague felt about his first england call up, saying something like "they give you £xxx just for being in the squad!"

Which says more about Shorey than the concept of unknowns getting international call upos.
