by Rob-Royal » 04 Feb 2013 17:50

One for the statto's...

So was last Sat the first ever time there was not one English representative in the starting 11...?

McLeary is down as English on the OS yet strangely wiki claims he played for Jamaica against Mexico recently....

Alex Pearce. Born in Wallingford, England.

Rob-Royal Akpan is listed as Nigerian.

Your question was about there being no Englishmen in the starting eleven. It doesn't matter what country they qualified for to represent at international level, Pearce and Akpan are both English born and raised.

We have a lot of British born players who represent countries of their ancestry. I'd be surprised if any of them held a non-British passport. I fully expect Kebe to hold a French passport despite having represented Mali, seems he considers himself more French these days anyway.

What was the question?

Oh yeah.

Non-issue.

He was born in Singapore, so England wasn't his place of birth.

I suspect McAnuff/Akpan et al, have British Passports and British citizenship. I'm English, but would be eligible for the Welsh squad.

I think Rob is on one. Akpan, Mcanuff and Pearce were all born in England and are all English. Just because they're families are Irish, Jamaican etc and they opted to play football for those countries does not automatically mean they're no longer English.

Just means they aren't good enough to play for England.

No need to get upset!
It depends how you interpret nationality. If someone is born in england, but to foreign parents, what nationality does that make them? In sport one has to choose, in real life we're british, english isn't a separate nation from the rest of britain.
