Pants day was in Pardew's reign. He didn't appreciate it, though Mr. Mad saw the funny side.

correct and thank you!

Remember Scotty traversing the Eaststand after he scored, throwing back a pair or two back to the crowd.

I used to think that if Burns had come the first time he was offered the job (when he decided to become Newcastle Assistant instead and we got Terry the Taxi) he would have been all right, as what he was trying to do would have been more suited to Division 1 rather than Division 2. But now I think he was just a bit clueless and we would have ended up relegated regardless.

He also had no idea on the value of players as opposed to their cost. I recall he said in a Fans Forum when questioned about his signings, and whether he shouldn't look in the lower leagues for some cheapies: "A £50,000 player is just a £50,000 player." Obviously spending £20k on Shane Long would have been a total waste of monet to Burns.

I go back before 1970 and Burns just edges Bullivant for me.

Porterfield actually improved the team quite quickly when he started.

Wimb Rodgers had his flaws but 23 games is too small a sample size to really compare, while his signings have generally gone on to do quite well, with McAnuff and Mills doing well, Bertrand now an England international etc.

Although Mills did pretty well for us, I might point out that Rodgers preferred to play Darren O'Dea over our club record signing. Rodgers also played a totally green 19 year old at right back - who has only really reached Championship standard some three years later - whilst a perfectly good right back, albeit a bit of a twat, was sent out on loan.

I think Rodgers just wasn't quite ready for the job and made matters worse by his choice of advisors.

Burns wins this hands down. He might not have had the worst record in terms of results but for spunking the amount of transfer cash (new players wages included) for the division we were in, he should've been sent out with the garbage he bought.

When Branfoot got the sack (I remember his last game away at Orient in 1989 very well. We lost 1-4. Suffice to say we were crap), Smee went public with a "£60,000 per year salary offer for the right man" - a lot of dosh in those days, which is the only reason Porterfield was attracted. Shows you how times have quickly changed.

Conversely, I'd say our top 3 managers have been Evans, Coppell and McDermott with Copps maybe edging it as the best but I'll reserve judgement until the end of the season - if we stay up, our best (and most successful manager) ever will be McD.

Like most, I agree, but thats for the other threads already raised several times.

Worst manager? Porterfield, although Charlie had his moments

Best is subjective, but by any objective measure Coppell would still be more successful; promoted with record points and finished the first Premier League season in 8th place.

Burns was shocking but he bought Forster and Murty. Two of the best signings RFC has had in the last 20 years I would say.

It's the Kes approach. Throw enough shit and some of it'll stick.

Strangely, one of our best and worst managers was the same man, Jack Mansell. He almost got us promoted back to the old 2nd Division for the 1st time in nearly 50 years in 1971 with a really entertaining style of football, and then got us relegated into the old 4th division for the 1st time in our history in 1972.

Murty achieved great things with us, but of all the 05/06 side he represented the worst value for money IMO. Certainly not such a great signing compared to Cureton, Kitson, Shorey, Sonko, Sidwell, Harper, Ingimarsson, Little, Doyle, Long, Federici, Le Fondre...

Burns all day long.

I, quite literally, think I could've done a better job.
