Nigel Adkins - a personal opinion

by The Naughty Sausage » 27 Mar 2013 20:21

Good evening Royals fans, Saints fan here.

It's fair to say a little piece of me died inside (and many other Saints fans, too) when we saw NA at the unveiling. The blue tie, the cheeky quips, the trademark honesty and integrity - we still miss that and will likely always will do.

I thought I'd stop by and give you a personal low-down on NA both as a person, manager and what can you expect in the upcoming months. But first, I feel I must flesh out this post a little bit before I continue.

When NA arrived at Saints, we were completely underwhelmed. The Scunny fans told us that we'd got a real gem but most of us were Googling him trying to find out more about him not just as a manager, but as a person. We'd expected a bigger name, a thoroughbred if you like and we ended up with what we perceived was a lucky physio.

How absolutely wrong we were and as you all know, his stock has risen quite considerably since the B2B promotions and his first venture into the PL.

Anyway, I digress. The first couple of months were painful, progress-wise. We looked like we regressed initially as a team, with stuttering performances and unconvincing results. The one constant was NA's positive and infectious attitude - he kept drumming on (to some, it was irritating but to others, it was clear he was changing the focus and mentality of the club for the better) about being "Together As One". This was textbook PMA and as a club, the supporters and players responded by buying into his mantra.

Not to soon after, results took a positive upturn. We began to look like a side fighting as one, a side who'd run through a brick wall for their manager. It was clearly evident within 3-4 months that NA's influence was beginning to show. We started to play attacking, free-flowing, exciting football. It was very rare to walk away from St. Mary's or elsewhere that season without thinking you'd got your money's worth and more.

After promotion to the Championship, NA continued to repeat his PMA slogans ad infinitum whilst steadily adding to a fairly capable squad. Notably, he bought players with exceptionally solid backgrounds (a family, settled) and never hankered after notorious trouble makers or any big names. He chose players with the right attitude, of good character and equally importantly, solid, technically gifted footballers.

Well, you know what happened that season in nPC. You won the league, but we were momentously happy to get a return to the Premier League as well. We'd like to think that we too done it in style, playing attractive, free-flowing, passing football - a type of football we hadn't seen since the 80's. Arguably he's the best manager we've ever had achievements wise - this, however, is countered by people who can remember a bit further back but for the likes of me and my generation, it was the most fun we've ever had as Saints supporters.

This was almost entirely down to Nigel and his staff.

We were absolutely gutted when he was relieved of his duties - and it still upsets quite a few people to this day. He was a fantastic manager, person and motivator and he'll have you playing attractive, winning football if you buy into his methods and mantras and back him 100%. You're lucky to have him, we'll miss him, that's for sure.

So what for you guys? How will his reign begin? Personally, I think you're two games short of giving it a real good go. If there was ten games left, I'd have said he'd have a half-decent chance of pulling you clear. As it stands, there's only 8 games left and I'm not sure if you can make up the points difference in time (though I hope you will as it'd be delightful to see Aston Villa, QPR and ANother go down).

However, if the worst does happen and you are relegated, be sure to know that you'd be in safer hands than us (I'm not really sure I could trust MP in the nPC, despite the way we've been playing recently). He's an astute manager and he knows the league (and the ones below) and more often than not, a good tactician (though some Saints would disagree with that).

The pretty, winning football won't happen over night. It'll be a good month or so before you seen any of this bear fruition but soon you'll be noticing the patterning-of-play changing and quick, passing, football being installed. You'll be ropey at the back sometimes, sure but you'll create more than enough opportunities to win games. I'd bet that if you start Le Fondre and you're creating chances then you'll have a good, fighting chance.

Whatever happens, good luck for the rest of the season. Look after NA for us, he's a real treasure! :D

PS: If there's anything else you want to know that I haven't mentioned, just ask - I'll try fill in the gaps if I can.

Great read, thanks for that.

How is he with younger players coming out of the academy? Obviously at Southampton you have a few very talented graduates in and around your first team atm..how much of this is down to Nige or was he just lucky with the quality of players coming through? We have a very strong group of 17/18 year olds so I'd have thought high up on our list requirements for a new manager would be an ability to work with youngsters.

he likes a good sunbed

personally, dont hate me for this, I think you will go down.
however, next season, with a full pre season and addition of a couple of good players, you have a good man for the job

if you get Billy Sharp, who adkins tried many times before finally getting him for us, you will have goals

one thing is for sure, adkins was lucky with some real buys from pardew and use of the academy in lallana and Chamberlain

dont get me wrong, he had the luxury of one of the best academies in the country to use.

he brought Oxlade-chamberlain as a 17(ish) year old into the team ahead of Jason Puncheon and it worked to devastating effect.
He got great performances out of adam lallana and brought in Luke Shaw this season.

but these were incredible young players so no idea if he would do this at reading. Have no idea if you have top younger players coming through

oh, he was also fortunate that alan pardew saw it fit to spend the best £1m our club has ever spent....he had Rickie Lambert at his peak age

Thanks NS, was an interesting read...looking forward to seeing Adkins build a team and wish you all the best for the rest of the season, although I reckon you're easily safe already.

TheSaintlee he likes a good sunbed

I remember when we lost at 'Boro and his fake tan was running down his face after it'd pissed down

Yeah, he does like the orange look. Expect to strike up a bitter rivalry with Brighton now you've appointed NA - they still aren't over him winding them up on L1.

Btw, no worries with the message and thanks for the welcome... I almost felt compelled to post and let you know you've got a good replacement for Brian McDermott.

As SaintLee said, to an extent, he was lucky that we had Lallana already established and Oxlade-Chamberlain coming through. This year, he blooded Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw and from what I personally know, he was absolutely revered by the academy players down there. He's very involving, he'll learn everyones name from the senior squad downwards and he won't be afraid of introducing them into the team if he thinks they're ready. He's definitely no dinosaur when it comes to management of younger players, unlike Saggyface Redknapp who told our previous bunch of youngsters they were crap (Walcott, Dyer, Blackstock, Best, Cranie et al).

2 world wars, 1 world cup Thanks Saints, really good input. Much appreciated.

If Adkins doesn't keep us up we will call for him to be sacked.

will also add, when he first came to saints, I (and some others) were concerned as he kept his family up north for a while and that can be an easy target for people when teams go through the inevitable dip.

but he is now settled in the south and absolutely loves the area apparently. He lives in/near Winchester with his family etc, so he is settle down here if you get me

he likes strolls in the country and those fans who have seen him and his family around Winchester said nothing but great things about how friendly he was and how much time he had for fans. This was also said when he was seen watching local park football etc

Oh, Brighton Fans ABSOLUTELY HATE HIM. when we were fighting it out in league 1, he questioned whether they could keep up with us.
They went mental and harped on about them winning league 1 and how he refused to allow our players form a guard of honour at theirs (as they had just been crowned champions).....yet they could not keep up :D

Also very true. Those who've met him will testify how personable and approachable he is - he'll always take time out to speak with the fans, listen and actually have a good ol' chat with them. He's definitely a rare breed but anyway, you'll find that out as you all get to "know" Nigel. :)

You mentioned Brighton too as well, haha

Yes, it's true, that can't stand him, he drives them crazy. If you do unfortunately go down, please don't forget to ask them whether they can keep up... and just sit, back and watch them go wild in anger ;)

Gah, I still miss him :D

I don't think many Reading fans have really thought that staying up is even a possibility since the Villa game 2.5 weeks ago, however, quite honestly I don't care. There are many advantages of championship football over premier league football, not least winning more games than we'll lose, and that's ultimately what football fans want to see their team do (and yes, I did say the same thing about the 2 leagues 11 months ago too).
