I've just seen that, he wasn't even at Reading then. Also in the Post: "The ultimate David vs Goliath. Little old Reading versus then giants Luton Town was a mismatch of the highest proportions." Huh??

Luton were flying high in the old Div 1, and had another Wembley trip in the form of the League Cup iirc.

Back then, there was no $ky funding and with exception of (maybe) Liverpool, no uber clubs...also (back then) the League Cup was worth something.


So yes, relative "top of the prem and league cup finalists v bottom of the championship" was kind've David v Goliath......not to mention the superior clubs we somehow knocked out along the way (even Oxford were "Prem" then).


Guess you had to be there (including those unlikely qualifying victories)

Of course, it was a shock victory, but hardly the 'ultimate' David vs Goliath. I was at the qualifying matches, plus all the Leyland Daf/Associate Members' Cup/Group Cup (or whatever it was called) games from around that time, and loved 'em

I made my 9 year old and 6 year old sit through the build up, the goals and the players getting onto the coach yesterday courtesy of YouTube.

20 minutes of pure joy. For me at least.

Talking about watching the entire game - at a certain nobbers 21st they had the Simod Cup final on a continuous loop as the festivities progressed.

Wasn't good, was it? And do you remember when they showed highlights on TVS that evening (or next day)? They dubbed on commentary from David Bobin AFTER the game! Comical but appalling at the same time

I guess the coverage was a thing of its time.

My (whence sobered up) highlight, was filling up my car at the Penta Garage (where Morrisons now sits) the next morning.....and on the bottom of the receipt was printed "WELL DONE READING- CUP WINNERS"

Made it all real, although I cannot recall any big open top bus gestures
