I've noticed breaking up play for most teams in the premier league involves forcing errors, rather than winning tackles, and then picking up the second ball.

Of course you do still get tackles, they are an important part of the game, but how many teams have a deep playmaker these days rather than a 5th defender?

A forlorn hope I'm afraid. Our plight this season has understandably sucked the hope out of most of our supporters and the way we were so outclasses yesterday was another blatant reminder of how poor we are. The rest of this season is about having a few jollies, the results are a distant second.

Yes it was bad, but I've seen worse and it was hardly unexpected. From where I was up with the Arsenal fans we looked like what we are - a team at the bottom of the league. Strangely I thought the defence did as best they could and was let down by the midfield who really did nothing. In terms of effort the laziest player on the pitch was Guthrie, who was second best to just about anything, and did little when he had the ball.

I know you hate him Leon, but Guthrie wasn't lazy at all, he certainly faded in the second half, but he covered as much grass as any Reading player in the first, mainly because Jem and Ledge refused to step out of the back six.

Probable more a case of people saying it enough times so they believe it. Sadly it's more out of hope than reality.

Guthrie is a bit better than what we had before, but his attitude means he should be first out the door in the summer, even if it is a free or his contract is cancelled via mutual consent.

I thimk thats the point. Guthrie offers potentialy something a bit better. At least he attempts to switch play or look for the through ball which was evident yesterday. He's by no means the greateat but appears to possess more natural ability than the other options.

From what I saw watching online, there were a few positive signs of Reading starting to try to pass the ball on the ground more regularly (when they had it of course!), but still all much of the same old problems that have cost us throughout the season (and so consequently did on Sat too). I feel Southampton is definitely the last drink in the last chance saloon now as far as this season goes.......

not true. I want to give him a chance - but yesterday he contributed nothing. He might have covered every blade of grass but it was always 2 minutes after his Arsenal opposite number. Dreadful performance.

Guthrie is the worst thing about this season.
People seem to worship him, think that he's some kind of Messi-clone, and there are even those who have been harping on about how McD was at fault for not playing him, almost as if we'd be in the top three if only we had been playing Guthrie more.

You really are a miserable old fart aren't you? When I first started reading this forum your brilliant posts about how TSI was never going to go though kept me entertained through a dull Spring. Since then you've jumped at any chance to criticise Anton and anything associated with him. Give it a rest.

Danny Guthrie is a very capable footballer who had a poor game yesterday, just like the other 10 Reading players on the pitch. There's a reason a lot of people call for him in the side - without him we're often poor at best and his return to the side coincided with our January revival - coincidence? Ignoring the hyperbole, I do think if Guthrie, Kebe, Pog, Mariappa, Shorey and Kelly had started every game this season we'd be noticeably higher up the table.

Thought the Arsenal fans were absolute crap, talk about a morgue and zero support for your team then that made the Mad Stad look positively Deafening by comparison

Reading were dreadful, as expected, and to be honest I'd be happy to see the whole squad go in the summer as so very few are anywhere near PL ability.

May as well now give opportunities to some of the younger players like Obita, Samuel and Hector by making them substitutes so at least they might get some game time and we can see how they might go in Division 2

Very nervy looking RFC side, looked completely overwhelmed by it all which is understandable.

At no point did it look like we had 5 midfield players on the pitch, Arsenal looked like they had 2 or 3 extra players every time they had the ball

Difficult to take anything from that game I suppose, but by no means is that a great Arsenal side and pressing them further up the pitch wouldn't have gone a miss.
