Don't get the loving for Guthrie. He is a arrogant cocky sod who doesn't give two hoots about his fellow players or the club (aka Sunderland away) and when he is given the chance to start he doesn't perform. Everyone moaned at Legs around me at Arsenal on Saturday but IMO Guthrie was far worse, passing was rubbish and he wasn't tracking his player for the 2nd goal.

Makes me sad that people were cheering him on over Legs against Villa. :(

That's simply not true. He didn't set the world alight, but he wasn't awful.

Comes to something when criticism of Guthrie is 'he is our best midfielder but...' when you consider he has hardly played.

He is our best central midfielder, but average at best.

Typical "flatters to deceive" player, just like Matejovsky was, momentary indications of ability but continual indications of lacking commitment, judgement and continually giving the ball away.

Yes but at least Matejovsky could score in a brothel.

He is not "our best midfielder"

He may have the best first touch and can occasionally make a half-decent pass
but he does very, VERY little work, jogs around a lot

Just check his stats, and the team's stats when he has played

Being the best passer is not enough. It's overall contributions to the game that matter.

He doesn't win many tackles, rarely intercepts, has zero assists, and had one goal which was a horrible keeper error.

It's not as if he gets the ball and a thrill goes through the crowd, is it?

When he has started and been on the pitch for the goals, this is the result

1-1 D 90 H Stoke
2-4 L 90 A Chelsea
1-3 L 83 H Spurs
0-1 L 90 A WBA
0-1 L 81 A Liverpool
0-0 D 90 H Swansea
1-0 W 65 H West Ham
1-3 L 90 A Spurs
3-2 W 90 H WBA
1-4 L 90 A Arsenal

10 Starts, 8 points 10-19 = a 30 point season

We were LOSING 1-0 at Newcastle, he came off and we won 2-1
We were LOSING 2-0 to Chelsea, he came off and we drew 2-2

We were drawing 0-0 at Man City, he came on and we lost 1-0

He came on v Villa when we were losing 1-2, no change

So for someone who is supposed to be God's gift to football he is hardly showing it, is he?

TBF he made a good cross-field path for Kebe in the WBA game that eventually resulted in a penalty

Guthrie is a sulky player who does not track back and drops his head when he gives the ball away.

The article in The Sun and by Jonny Fordham in the local rag today sums him up.... he's not a team player and thinks he is better than what he is.

I'm sure a number of players were thinking it....Guthrie appears to be the one that said it...

I would hazard a guess that he may have been on here, twitter, etc and is trying to appeal to a certain group of fans who sympathise with him.

His comments are right though, but he should still learn to keep things in house. I for one hope he's here next season now that he'll be used in the right system.

Would LOL if Adkins drops him for the next game. Hahaha.

I don't care what he thinks TBH but he really needs to just STFU & play football. Like a poor unfunny version of Joey Barton.

Why is this thread in UR&G? It's not as if there's any uncertainty as to whether he said it or not.

All I read is that 'he isn't the white Pele', as if being the best midfielder at the club but not being obviously too good for us is a crime.

Fwiw I think the 'standard he has been built up to be' has mostly been built up by those who don't like him.

Many of his 'supporters' just want to see the only genuine ball-playing midfielder at the club get a run of games.

But the eye sees what it wants to see. First half on Saturday he covered more ground than anyone (mainly because Legs and Jem were crabbing around in front of the penalty box) yet still some termed him 'lazy'. It's totally mental.
