Has anyone considered that we may have scaled back our scouting as part of the savings needed to cope with losing the parachute payments? It takes a while to develop the sort of network you need to effectively scout all of Europe and find the right sort of players to fit your need, ethos and quality. And it probably takes a little while to resestablish it once you've scaled back.
It's hardly surprising we weren't better prepared for promotion, it was rather a surprise. And Carrico could potentially be someone we were aware of from a season or so ago when we maybe had better European scouting resources and so we went back to him without really appreciating his current situation and perhaps getting unlucky with a medical.
It's hardly the end of the world, it's happened, we get over it and we move on. There's no point getting into recriminations because we've already taken some decent steps to address the problem and we can't do anything about the mistakes of the past other than try and learn from them. No matter how good your scouting network is you are still going to get a fair proportion of poor, mediocre or mixed success signings. We've certainly had our fair share of great signings. The problem is that our less good (key) signings tend to come in clumps at the higher level. Probably because our club is still incredibly inexperienced when it comes to what it takes to build a successful Premier League team and sign Premier League quality players.
Our normal tactic in the Championship is to buy rough diamonds and develop them over a season or so, so it's no wonder we struggle with signing players who can make a near instant impact about a level and a half better than our typical signings.
