Nice to see the BBC 3 weeks behind as ever.
Mixed week for Slough:-
- great 3 points against Biggleswade
- disappointing draw away at Barton Rovers, whose twitter account said 'not bad for team of village idiots' in reference to some shenanigans with 2 Slough players in the reverse fixture (those 2 were prevented from playing by the Slough chairman presumably to decrease tensions)
- easy 5-1 win against Leighton Town, who were very poor
- very poor 1-0 defeat at Burnham - never got going, didn't cope with Burnham's high line and pressing, and frankly didn't deserve anything. Ref was terrible, 9 bookings with barely a dirty foul in the game, classic STEP04 stuff really. Still, 448 there (mainly Rebels obv) was good, highest attendance of season so far.

Can see a straight fight between Burnham and Rugby for auto, Rugby have won 10 in a row so probably favourites, so if Slough make the play-offs they could face Burnham again.

Anyway, onwards to Northwood tomorrow night, and Royston Saturday!

I've said it before but i really don't know why Slough are spending so much to get promoted without their own ground! Fair enough if the owner has deep pockets but you just have to look down the road for how it can, and most the time does, go wrong!

Two big crowds in Burnham and Windsor on the same day. Good to see. Not that i was able to get to any games in weeks!

...and yet another big setback last night - Rebels lose to a 94th minute goal at Northwood - having led early on. Their own fans seem to think they've become a tad one-dimensional - ie give it to Burnell.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I went out and indulged in, what is known in Anorak-speak as, a spot of 'silly season' football.
Non-lit early KO (18:30) : Hellenic One West Cricklade 1-3 Old Woodstock. - at least there was a programme and a badge :) - for the eldests' collection. He'd actually swanned off to Lahnden with his Mum to ring bells!
There was also a bar upstairs in the Leisure Centre had the need arisen.
I took the other two with me - and though a bit cold and extremely dark by 20:00h :? , they both endured the conditions and (I think) genuinely enjoyed it - particularly as their evening was rounded off with a big KFC on the way home - back indoors by 9.
May try it again tonight over at Letcombe - though with cloud cover looking the way it is - and some snow :o - I can see some problems getting a game completed. Even last night the ref sensibly played barely 40' each way - with less than 5' turn-round at H/T ... and it was very gloomy by the end. I think the league sensibly allows 'unlit' games to be re-scheduled this early in April probably on the understanding they won't be the full 90' and generally try and get the 'dead rubber' matches done and dusted. Though of course w/o floodlights they are hardly likely to involve teams impacting on promotion issues anyway.
What can be quite disappointing as a follower of footy at this level, is the number of these clubs deep in NIMBY coomunities, that play on pitches adjacent to fully floodlight Tennis/Hockey/Bowls etc - but don't have a snowflake in Hades chance of ever upgrading their own facilities. :roll:
...some other local games on tonight (Thu) too at more conventional times/venues - Farnham, Ab Town, Ascot (v Binfeld), Holyport & Wok & Emm (vs Cheltenham Sarries)
I was there last night - could have been 3 up after 10 minutes, but for both Smith and O'Toole putting decent chances wide (Burnell was on the bench). The issues are tiredness (5 games in 9 days, with very little rotation, making people wonder why all the other players were signed on before the deadline when they're not available), lack of width (Parsons kept drifting in, Chandiram didn't get up much in the first half) but most worrying is lack of fight and passion.
In the second half Slough had several chances cleared off the line, then got hit with the sucker-punch at the end. The player who scored had not 30 seconds before pulled his shorts down a la Stephen Ireland, dirty boy!
Hey ho, on to Royston Town on Saturday. At least Biggleswade only drew 1-1 with Daventry tonight...
Not sure where to stick it so I'll stick it here - but it could probably go in any number of threads across HNA?
Scarborough Athletic boss Rudy Funk was left apoplectic with rage after hearing some recent comments by fans of the club.
His team - which has got 90 points so far this season, has been the target of abuse from fans so he let rip with a brilliant quote :
"I rang all of the lads and told them this after the game. They have enough to focus their minds on at the moment without getting abuse from the fans.
These are people that know nothing about football. They probably sit in their front room, eat their fish and chips, spill sauce on the floor and then sit in it.
“Football isn’t just about what you do with the ball, it is also about what you do off the ball.
Amazing scenes at Horley v Windsor.
Cricket umpire Ian Gould's son George, who has been a bit of a makeshift centre forward for the last 3 months since Ben Harris was ruled out for the 2nd half of the season (it's really not his position but he's bagged a decent tally of goals nonetheless) had to play between the stick for the 1st time since he was 11 years old as injury kept Rob Bullivant out.
Ian Gould himself, England ODI 'keeper in years gone by, did play Youth Football as keeper for Arsenal (until 17 yo when he stopped growing) so young George has a pedigree but it seemed a big ask.
George was very safe, made a decent save early on which must have given him confidence but Windsor conceded midway through the 1st half. Looking the more likely team to score in the 2nd half it seemed Windsor just would not convert however gilt edged the opportunity.
Then with about 5 mins left we get a corner. Gould sprints up (we think, bloody hell it's a bit early for that) and meets the corner sweetly on his nut to equalise!! The 15 Windsor fans go nuts, and the 30 from Horley shuffle off quietly.
Great fun.
Bangor City through to play Prestatyn Town in an all North Wales Welsh Cup final after beating TNS 1-0 at Rhyl's Belle View ground.
The news may have cheered Nigel a little last night, it did me at least.
Really? It was said yesterday that the 1st time he'd be in the squad was the 14th.
He and his wife are running a half marathon in Guernsey soon and he has lost a stone in weight. But the last time he played in a charity game on the island he was given the runaround by extremely average players apparently, so the feeling is it may be more of a publicity stunt than any real prospect of him contributing.
However, Steve Claridge was able to play a very major part in Gosport Borough's promotion last year (at a higher level) and he was (then) a year older than MLT is now. (But he had carried on playing a lot longer of course.)
I follow 'Le Tiss' on twitter and he stated not long ago he's fitter now than he was as a player! :mrgreen:
Shame his 'one club' status is over but would be awesome to see him score a 30 yarder again! I am sure Soccer Saturday will cover it giving the club more publicity. It's a real success story that is for sure but i wonder how high they can go before the system they have now limits them.
Chester are 100 points ahead of Hinckley in Conference North. I've never seen a 100 point gap in a league table before.
Mind you, Hinckley have got two games in hand.
