If Thatcher is mentioned the Liverpool fans should turn their backs and stick their fingers up at the directors box.

paultheroyal Well, this all adds an extra little dimension for Saturday.

Oh dear Sir John what have you done.

If Thatcher is mentioned in any small way on that pitch moments before whistle blows to commence the minute silence then there will be carnage!

Yeah that's what they're saying but is there a source? The fa have said no to the minutes silences, so he can't have one anyway!

They haven't said no. They've not asked clubs to observe one.

You do sometimes wonder why the club bothers to employ a media team given their complete and utter lack of understanding about how news stories flow in the present day.

It is however quite clear that any minute's silence for the Hillsborough victims will be properly observed by all, even if linked to the death of anyone else who deserves no such tribute. I predict the silence will be followed by brief applause and then a lengthy rendition of "We're going to have a party..."

Why would Madjeski open his mouth about this in the press FFS. He's perfectly entitled to his own views but this reflects quite badly on the club

I'll be quiet for the Hillsborough 96, but we all secretly know this is for Thatcher.

This should be interesting.

Would it be inappropriate to take up the clubs £15 offer of that free shirt printing and get "THATCHER No.1" put on the back? I sit next to the away fans in Y26 so could ask them

Okay you're right, the club are going to go:

"Ladies and gentlemen please join us in a minute's silence in memory of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough 24 years ago. Oh but it's a little bit for Margaret Thatcher too"

You utter moron.

If I was at the game and there was a call for a minute's silence in memory of that woman, I would get up out of my seat and return to the concourse and continue to go about my business. There is no way that I would ever wish to pay any sort of respect to her.

Absolutely ridiculous that we'd even consider paying respect to the first and only woman PM who put her life into dragging the country out of the mess that socialism had left it in.

Never been more embarrassed to support Reading FC.

Christ on a bike, SJM has opened a huge shitty can of worms with this shit.
RFC should ditch their plans of a silence for either The 96 or Thatcher as the sentiment has been completely lost. The Scousers won't adhere to it either way as they think it will be for Maggie although disguised.
WTF was SJM thinking?
Have to agree with the above statement, Embarrassing.

A minutes silence for the 96 is a very fitting tribute, one which I am happy to observe, but to link it with the death Thatcher would be insensitive. Fingers crossed the powers that be realise this.

What doesn't sit comfortably with me however, are the rumours that Liverpool fans are planning a 'party' to celebrate the passing of our former PM, and are set to mock her death through chanting at the game. Whilst I understand their intense feelings of dislike for her, if we are to be respecting the passing of their loved ones they should show an ounce of dignity by respecting the death of someone else's regardless of what happened in the past. I'm not saying they should hold a silence for her, or have to make any form of tribute, I'm just asking that they keep their feelings to themselves and moreover keep politics out of football.

Regardless of what happened in the past, her last days were spent as a frail elderly lady, not the power crazed socially out of touch monster they hold in such disregard.

Haven't we done enough this season? The scarves at the memorial and then the YNWA song after the truth came out. I think this is a joint Thatcher/Hillborough minute so the Liverpool fans can't boo.

I think you can go a bit too far and a minutes silence for a 24th aniversary has, in my view, crossed that line. Although the Hillborough deaths were tragic I don't think it's neccessary to mark the occasion this year, though if Liverpool wanted to do so at Anfield then so be it.

It is also rather selective, as an earlier poster pointed out nobody discusses the Heysel disaster or any of the unneccessary deaths caused then. Deaths which still leave Juventus fans bitter and have likely led to some of the hostility to English sides playing in Turin in recent years (stabings, assault...).

Back on topic, Maggie. Is it not a misguided criticism to complain about the banning of standing (following Hillsborough) and alcohol (during some of Engalnds worst years for hooliganism)?

Why? She fucking hated football fans. I will always observe a minute's silence but for her no, I'll be somewhere else.
