Other than its another pair of shorts and socks the manufacturers can get kids to buy why did keepers start getting different coloured shorts and socks to the rest of the team?

In fairness, there's only so much you can do with an all plain blue kit

Blue and white hooped socks, or a blue band at the top? Stamford Bridge on the front of the shirt, similar to United in 95/96 was it? There are things you can do to change it up a bit occasionally. You really might as well by an old Chelsea shirt from a couple of seasons ago and save yourself a lot of money; that or go retro and buy a shirt from the late 80's early 90's and try and convince everyone you're not a plastic jonny come lately.
