leon
Jackson Corner Great result and well deserved. If only SJM was more like Dave Wheelan we could have experienced something like that. Very envious

what? not spend much money and get relegated?

And win the F.A. Cup. As Roy Keane said yesterday, it's all about glory i.e. winning trophies. Winning the F.A. Cup > 4th in the PL (or even 18th for that matter).

Glory > Survival. What's the point of just surviving, if not to win something? Just surviving = amoebas.

Still, what would we know, we've won F**** All.

This will further prove the point for me. I do believe Wigan fans would trade any of their Premier League survival seasons for another day like yesterday. Survival is temporary, domestic cup victories stay with you forever.

Also, I do believe Budweiser and ESPN are doing well trying to bring back the magic of the FA Cup. We had the best ever season of the Premier League last year this year has been the best ever season for cup competitions.

Being honest, winning the Championship with 106 points was better than finishing so high up the following year. Mainly I feel this because we won something. See Birmingham and the C.Cup a few years ago too. I'd have taken that win over Arsenal and going down. Any day.

Agreed that as one-off achievements Cup wins are massively better than survival.

However in the long run, survival in the PL is more important to a club than cup success. Just look at the state the likes of Pompey and Birmingham are in now.

soggy biscuit Charity Sheild will feel a little odd if Wigan go down

Can't imagine Wigan would really be happy having to postpone their 2nd game of the season to play a friendly

Opening game of the season, the shield will be on 4 August (and what a totally pointless game it is anyway irrespective of who pays in it)

By the way how are Wigan going to accommodate playing in the European equivalent of the Johnstone paints trophy as well as 46 league games, league and FA cups and meaningless Wembley appearances

The same way Millwall and Birmingham did - i.e. it will ruin any promotion hopes. Good news for us!

Assuming we're anywhere near promotion or even Play-Offs.

I think that was implicit in the statement.

Not really. It makes him look like he expects us to be up there when we may not.

Very arrogant tbh.

Wigan are playing 48 games this season anyway. Prioritise the Championship and EL, play reserve teams in the 2 domestic cups and the first team then play 54 games, same amount as other Champ teams would play on 2 reasonable cup runs or 1 cup run and play offs etc.

It's "good news" for us in the context of our hopes to be near promotion. You don't have to assume that we will be near promotion to agree with that.

Went to the game and when Wigan got that corner,I had a feeling they'd score so got my phone out. The rest, as they say is history 8) 8)

http://youtu.be/c_UKktNrZqQ

My only gripe was I thought Wigan would do it AET/pens so put £5 on them winning the cup @ 100/30 instead of winning inside 90 mins @ 7/1

Silver Fox Happy with the result and thoroughly deserved it was too. However, it was yet another dreadful FA cup final, at least I didn't watch it on itv

Really? I've seen a few comments along these lines. I thought it was one of the better Cup Finals of recent years. Thoroughly deserved win for Wigan. Happy for the club and their classy manager. Can almost forgive Dave Whelan for being a Thatcher fan as he's a true football man. Their fans can do one though. Not so fond memories of ball bearings being thrown at the playoff semi up there.

^ yep - really enjoyed the final. Just watching the game whilst drinking my face off turns out to be much more entertaining than complaining about how things aren't what they used to be.

It would have been better if City have of joined in. I found it pretty dull TBH and nowhere near as good as Chelsea/Tottenham earlier on in the week. That was what English football is all about.

That's the issue, as much as Wigan deserved it on balance they only had one shot on target in the game. Had Man City won the same game 1-0 with a goal in the 55th minute nobody would be remembering the game at all this morning
