Xavi In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.

Zidane My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder.

Iniesta Rooney is one of the best players in the world and I love watching him play. But if you had to pick out only one, then for their history and for all that they have achieved it would have to be Paul Scholes or Ryan Giggs. They are two shining examples for any player.

Edgar Davids I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is.

Pep Guardiola Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes – he is the best midfielder of his generation. I would have loved to have played alongside him.

Laurent Blanc I tell anyone who asks me – Scholes is the best English player.

Sir Bobby Charlton I have no hesitation in putting a name to the embodiment of all that I think is best about football. It’s Paul Scholes. Players like Denis Law and George Best who I enjoyed so much as team-mates and now, finally, players I have watched closely in the Alex Ferguson era. And in so many ways Scholes is my favourite. I love his nous and conviction that he will find a way to win, to make the killer pass or produce the decisive volley.

Patrick Vieira The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy – Scholes.

Theirry Henry I can’t understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t seek the limelight like some of the other ‘stars’.

Jose Mourinho Why isn’t he playing for England? It is crazy. Only in England. Scholes is a great, great player. So experienced and still, for me, one of the best in the world in midfield. Manchester United are lucky to have him.

Rio Ferdinand For me, it’s Paul Scholes. He’ll do ridiculous things in training like say, “You see that tree over there?” – it’ll be 40 yards away – “I’m going to hit it”. And he’ll do it. Everyone at the club considers him the best.”

Gary Neville I wouldn’t swap Paul Scholes for anybody. He is quite simply the most complete footballer I have ever played with. He is the best.

ALL THESE QUOTES FROM FELLOW PROFESSIONALS, BUT LAMPARD HAS BEEN IN MORE PLAYER VOTED TEAMS THAN SCHOLES - WHY IS THIS :?: :?: :?:

Of those quotes, only two are from English players. I would say that the continentals have a far better appreciation of what constitutes a great player than the generally uneducated English ones.

I'd say that those who play and compete with him week in, week out are better placed to judge rather than those whom they only play in knock out football m8.

Lampard completes the haul of titles at club level - something Scholes failed to do.

Lampard captains Chelsea in the final too - sign of a leader - please show me when Scholes last captained a team in a cup final?

I'd like to see the context of those quotes too, as there may have been very leading questions.

Either way, as I've said all along - individual honours is where you judge who the better player is m8

How can you compare the two players though, when they play different roles.......Scholes is there for his creativity/passing whereas Lampard is there for his goalscoring threat.

My view is that Scholes is more technically gifted but Lampard is more effective due to his goalscoring record, the Darren Caskey of his day if you will.

LOL. You can't judge how good a player is on how many individual honors he has won.

David May

UEFA Champions League: 1998–99
Premier League: 1995–96
Premier League: 1996–97
FA Cup: 1995–96
FA Cup: 1998–99
FA Community Shield: 1994
FA Community Shield: 1996

Scott Parker

Premier League: 2004-2005
UEFA Intertoto Cup: 2006

TIm Cahill

Football League Second Division: 2000–01
OFC Nations Cup: 2004

Nicklas Bendtner

Serie A: 2012–13

Matt Le Tissier

Thanks for backing my point up m8

Those aren't individual honours, they're honours for being part of a great team

Lampard has more PFA Player of the year nominations, Ballon D'Or Runners up etc than Scholes. End of.

Ross Turnbull has won 1 Premier League, 2 FA Cups, 1 Community Shield, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa League. He's played 7 matches for Chelsea. No-one would agree that makes him better than Jose Reina/Shay Given/Jaskelainnen...

He's certainly up there in terms of individual honours. Goals win matches though, so would place Lampard above Beckham on that basis.

What about assists for goals? - considering Beckham was usually out wide putting the crosses in......

Feel free to add Beckham's assists to his goals record - still won't match Lampard.
