Reading line-up: McCarthy, Gunter, Kelly, Gorkss, Morrison, Karacan, Guthrie, McCleary, Robson-Kanu, McAnuff (c), Pogrebnyak.

Substitutes: Taylor, Pearce, Mariappa, Akpan, Carrico, Blackman, Le Fondre.

Bizarre IMO

I'd say the reasoning is 3-fold

a) It's to try and counter the aerial threat of Carroll
b) A chance to have a look at him before the summer
c) Mariappa's playing for Jamaica throughout the summer so a chance to give him a rest

WTF? He was an average player for a team just relegated to League One and now starting in the PL. Harte left out because he has asked to leave clearly. Pearce on the bench as punishment for being a c*nt and Mariappa has probably asked to leave as well and has been shoved on the bench. That's the only reason I can think of.

OR maybe Adkins is giving him once chance to impress himself before deciding whether to ship him out in the summer.

F*ck's sake

^ beat me too it :( but yeah I would of worried with Mariappa dealing with Carroll. Rather it be Pearce (even if he's leaving) than Gorkss though!

Actually Adkins did say something like that earlier in the week. Makes sense now.

Why do you assume every player that's left out, has asked for a move???

Winchester had prb called it right...also Marriapa may not be 100% fit...

Well the fact it was widely reported earlier in the week that Harte wants out, and now he's been dropped from the side leaving no FB on the bench.

Well yeah, it's obviously the latter.

What's the big deal?

Yeah I can understand that. Morrison and Gorkss will hopefully be better against West Ham's aeriel threat and it gives Adkins a chance to have a look at him in a meaningless match before deciding whether to keep him on next year. Gorkss was excellent last year but has obviously had a pretty shocking season this year; after 2 promotions in 2 years, he's managed 2 relegations in 1! It might at least allow him to finish on a reasonably positive note if we can say keep a clean sheet today.

It's clearly to deal with West Ham's aerial football. :|

I can't believe one of last season's best players is being given a chance in a totally meaningless match that I couldn't be bothered to go to. I'M FURIOUS.

Yes, the best solution to deal with a couple of long balls is to replace a PL quality defender with an old bloke who has just been relegated to league one.

Oh yes, I forgot he was our player of the season before being shipped out! It's no wonder he is the first name on the team sheet now his loan at a league one club has finished! How silly of me!
