Reading confirm Pavel Pogrebnyak contract clause

Reading owner Anton Zingarevich has confirmed that Pavel Pogrebnyak could be set to leave the club due to a relegation release clause in his contract.

The Russia international striker joined the Royals last summer on a free from Stuttgart after he impressed during a stint on loan at Fulham.

However, things have not gone according to plan as he only scored five goals - one less than he managed during his half-a-season stint at Craven Cottage.

Now Reading have been relegated it seems likely that Pogrebnyak, as one of the club's highest earners, could leave.

"There's a clause in his contract which allows him to leave Reading if the club was relegated," Zingarevich told Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

"Regarding his five goals, Pogrebnyak can be blamed the least. Yes, he couldn't score some chances but the team couldn't create a single chance for him during some games.

"Pavel is considered to be a dependent and a strong striker in England."

The 29-year-old signed a four-year contract at the Madejski Stadium when he joined.

When he says "which allows him to leave Reading if the club was relegated" - does he mean on a free or if someone puts a bid in for him?!

Would have to believe it's a set fee (on the low side)

May not be, though - not having to pay his level of wages may be worth more to us than a fee would be. But a fee - if there is one - plus not paying his wages would be the best of all worlds.

Ideal Probably on high wages. If nobody else want to sign him we might end up stuck with him anyway.

Not unless we have the option to release him (ie there was a relegation release clause)

I'm not convinced any agent anywhere in the world would allow their client to sign a contract with that in. If there is something like that you can be sure it would include a substantial compensation payment.

Obviously but as you say, its probably cheaper than paying his wages for another year

They'll be a min fee that needs to be met first though. To be honest, it's not exactly devasting news is it? He's slow, and for a big guy gets bullied off the ball far to easily, and he can't jump. If we get £2.5m then brilliant.

Probably pretty easy for his agent to get around any minimum fee clause - 'Accept that club's offer or my client is quite happy to sit here picking up his wages for the remainder of his contract, at which point he will leave as a free agent.'

That wont be the case, Pog will be 32 when his contract is up, he'd be too old to play at this level (most probably)

Considering he wants to be in the World Cup squad next year, i doubt he will want to sit around in the reserves of a Championship side

He will have still picked up decent money from us, will be good enough for a decent team at Championship level and pick up a nice signing on fee as a free agent.

If he wants out he will go but we won't see how his agent has done it because the fee we receive will be 'undisclosed'. Ever since Bosman pitched in, virtually all of the commercial power has been in the hands of the players.

A game of poker then. Talking of gambling, I would wager that we don't get whatever the minimum fee is. As I said before, virtually all of the power is in the hands of the players and their agents.

I would be delighted if we sold him for £1.

We have just got to get rid of him. Getting money for him would be the icing on the cake, but the main thing is to get him off the wage bill. He is too slow, has no first touch, doesn't score enough and is too lightweight for the championship.

And Anton is going to buy us a nice new striker.
