A more measured analysis here.

The woodwork clearly favours the weaker sides which is not surprising given they will be doing more defending.

If you divide the actual league table into quartiles you find:

TOP QUARTILE F81 A 42 WD +39
SECOND QUARTILE F76 A69 WD +7
THIRD QUARTILE F64 A74 WD -10
BOTTOM QUARTILE F44 A80 WD -36 (That's us, btw)

Divide the WD (woodwork difference) by 5 (the number of clubs in each quartile) to get your expected club WD per quartile, ie +5, +1, -2, -7

Then compare each individual club's WD against the expected WD (line above) to see how lucky / unlucky they are:

Reading are spot on the expected at -7. As the OP suggests Liverpool are way out by 16 goals on this measure.

A miss within 5cm of the goal - could've been the wind
A miss from a header, after all it is foot ball
Unbelievable saves
Defended off the line (not saved by the goalkeeper)
Dodgy off side calls that rule a goal out
Goals that should've been off side
