PistolPete This thread is about McCarthy in the England squad, not about Federici.

However, I have NO IDEA how anyone can say Federici is arrogant. He left Australia and slept on teammates floors and earnt a month-to-month contract at this club, ....

You have to be arrogant to have succeeded at that, and as a professional footballer. Anyone meek and humble, and without the right levels of self-confidence and self-belief, just wouldn't have the determination to put themselves through that.

When McCarthy originally came in for Federici after the latter was injured against Watford in 2011 McCarthy conceded 3 goals against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and a soon to be relegated Sheffield United the week before Federici came back in. Federici in each time because he is the more complete footballer i.e he is a very good shot stopper and is also far more comfortable when the ball is at his feet than McCarthy is.

Normally I do Wum people over McCarthy but these made up stories about Federici are just getting ridiculous now.

Has anyone ever seriously suggested that in 2011 Federici wasn't the better 'keeper? I know I haven't, so to use that as an argument is particularly fatuous.

In 2011 people were talking about McCarthy's potential. That's now come to fruition and that's why he's in the England squad.

But because McCarthy is now better than Federici, why does that imply people think Federici is crap?

Sandman likes to take his opposition's point to the extreme so that he can then claim the middle ground and victory.

As Zac says, he's a bit of a WUM, and tbf quite a good one.

I disagree, that makes him determined. If he was arrogant he would have felt he deserved a contract and a longer term one at that. Arrogant people are usually lazy with a sense of right. Having confidence in ones-self is indeed important, but its critically different.

Not necessarily - you're talking about "greedy" and/or "lazy" there, and I'm not sure anyone's accused him of being that.

"Arrogance" is actually defined as "Having or displaying a sense of overbearing self-worth or self-importance" which is consistent with excessive self-belief. And if you need a high level of self-belief to succeed against the odds in such circumstances it doesn't take much to push that over the edge into "arrogance."

But it's nothing to be particularity offended or surprised about - the vast, vast majority of professional footballers I've met could legitimately be described as arrogant. They often need to be to get there in the first place, and the combination of success, money and being in the public eye often helps reinforce this.

Will McCarthy even be the most sought after goalkeeper this summer? There must be others out there like Kasper Schmeichel (and Leicester are financially similar to us?)

We need to hold onto him. He wont play week in week out at other "top 4" clubs.

Schmeichel's not actually that good though, unless he's made some serious improvements over the last year or so I haven't noticed. He's done as well as he has, because he's trading on daddy's name.

I agree, but I keep seeing him constantly being linked elsewhere with Premier League teams. He trades off the name, but it works.

I wonder how much of that is mainly the media, rather than clubs, who presumably have better talent spotting.

Gonna be going to the Ireland game, hoping Hodgson gives him a run out at some point, would love to see the first Reading player to get an England cap (I'm probably wrong) in person!

Schmeichel is pretty darn good. His problem is that he's eccentric. I think, if anything, there has been a backlash against him because of his name.

He really is not that good. Very error prone and I think if he wasn't the son of a great, there would be no hype surrounding him what so ever
