Have both Man Utd and England given up on Rooney as a striker now?

Well it was mostly awful but it's what you come to expect.

See Lineker's having a go about the formation, think it's horses for courses myself. Ireland at home I think England have every right to go 2 up front and back their midfielders to be better than Glenn Whelan and Jonathan Walters so i'm not so bothered about that.

England just lack quality, genuine quality. We are obsessed with 'pace' in this country so we don't actually encourage proper wide midfielders who can beat people with trickery and produce a telling well thought out cross. Instead we have greyhounds like Walcott and oxlade Chamberlain who run down blind alleys or when they do have a chance to produce a ball in they put it into areas rather than actually having the composure to pick someone out.

Central midfield also a massive problem, I don't get the Carrick love, I just don't like players like him water carriers that spend 90minutes passing it square and moving 10 yards. When he's next to Lampard there is no mobility there, no creativity, no flair for use of a better word. Lampard is a good player, not quite the same as he was and he hasn't got the legs to make those bursting runs as often as he used to, he did score from one of those last night which was a fine finish but he'd get in those postitions 5-6 times a game 5 years ago, probably does it twice now. I would play Lampard but he needs people around him.

I have no idea what Rooney was last night in terms of position, seemed to be everywhere without accomplishing a great deal. His passing was good he made a couple of nice through balls and interchanges but he should be the one in the box on the end of them, not setting up Theo Walcott to drill it at the keeper all night.

Glen Johnson is utter horse shit, has the positional sense of the Titanic and is a disaster waiting to happen in every match. shouldn't be anywhere near the squad so you have to allow yourself to be 1 down every time the bloke is playing.

Don't know what the answer is to be honest, the answers aren't in the building England don't have the players. Just a bunch of 30 something's plodding along same as it has been for ages now.

Tbf to Roy we've looked significantly better whenever Wilshere and Cleverley have been in the midfield (which they consistently have been when fit) so he didn't really have any options other than Lampard and Carrick. Sturridge then gets injured, forcing him to bring Defoe on who offers very little in the way of link-up play.

Plenty of decent young-uns around, Jones was pretty impressive when he came on and I actually thought AOC had a decent game, it's just trying to get them all fit I spose.

Fair play to Ireland though, it meant a lot more to them.

DandyRoyal Foster on for Hart. Booooo

Perhaps the brazil game will see McCarthy on for Hart at about the same point of the game.

Also looking forward to the end of our World Cup dream so that we can at last ditch the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Cole etc. and start properly seeing what the future could bring by way of the next generation of carthorses ....

I said this about AOC on here best part of a year ago...

Royal Rother Oxlade Chamberlain is Mr Blind Alley - he's got some serious learning to do. Good strength, fast and quite skillful but I'm not sure he really knows how to play in a team.

As you suggest, he hasn't improved at all.

Rooney England's best player. Played reasonably well in the 2nd half and should have gone on to win it.

We're always going to be an average international team until we produce a Mata, a Silva, a Xavi, a Iniesta, a Ronaldo, a Messi, a Bale.

We have good players, but don't have any players who have that extra bit of technical skill and flare.

I see what you did there.

If I was making the same point, I would have said, "We're always going to be an average international team until we produce a Kebe, a Silva, a Xavi, a Iniesta, a Ronaldo, a Messi, a Bale."

supporting England is awful and has been since 1967.

the expectancy is enormous, the outcome almost always disappointing. Trouble is, I have not learned not to care.

I defo get the Carrick love in a Utd team. Watched him a few times and he made it look so easy barely broke swept, made the ball do all the work. I'm not sure i've ever seen him do the same for England. Wellbeck is coming along for Utd but can't see him being a prolific goalscorer inan England shirt

Wilshere>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Cleverly

What year did England fail to qualify for a tournament.....lost interest since then.

England's friendly with Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday has been suspended over safety issues at the recently-renovated Maracana stadium.
A court order on Thursday ruled that the game cannot go ahead.
But senior officials at the Football Association have told BBC Sport that they have received assurances from their Brazilian counterparts that the game will be played as scheduled.
The problem is understood to relate to the submission of necessary paperwork.

Thats what i'm saying he's not really a goal scorer but offered a lot to Utd in the games i saw. I never really got the original hype about Wellbeck
but he does a decent job at Utd

It probably helps to have technical players who show some degree of intelligent movement. England's movement was statuesque against Ireland. They all just amble around expecting something magic to happen. Unless someone's bursting down the flank. It's like watching Reading under McDermott this year.

I don't get that bit.

The expectancy generally is that we'll go out in the quarter finals to the first decent team we play.

I do agree with what was said about the total absence of creativity in the players we produce, and the obsession with pace. 30 years ago players were being rejected for not being big enough. Now players get rejected for not being quick enough.

I remember speaking to someone from Holland about "technique". Here were associate it purely with ball control. Over there, ball control is taken for granted, and it's apparently more about the ability to play tactically. Even though it conjures up images of immensely dull 80s Italian football, the idea that football is like a game of chess seems apt, as it's all about moving the ball around to create an opening, rather than lumping a percentage ball into the box. We might set ourselves up to try and play 4-3-3, but we don't have the players who know how to play it.
