If it converts one fan to renew when they weren't otherwise going to then it's been a good move. Better to make statements boldly and be positive and up front about all you can be to show there is ambition at last beginning to appear in the club.

We've already seen a change on the pitch to a much better way of playing, than the 2/3 years of predictable hoof ball we had previously, to start the positive feel around the place and now we have a manager supposedly putting his aim into words. Add to that one great signing already and being vociferous in the press about wanting Gary Hooper and there could be something quite special starting to brew...

Only time will tell of course but its all steps in the right direction.

I hope Adkins isn't managing the fans at the expense of the playing squad.

Eh?

They send out renewal letters every year. They would have sent some form of advertising letter this year with or without the message. Therefore the additional cost of including Nigel's message was negligible.

Latest comment on the Daily Mail article.

No offence but Adkins always sounds like a 10 year old trying to sound smart in his interviews. Very simply type of fella

It's kinda refreshing having a manager go to lengths to try to make it clear he values the fans and wants a culture of positivity throughout all aspects of the club. Rather than just mouth the usual platitudes about how the fans are great and like another player in interviews.

You've got to hand it to Adkins, even if you don't like the execution. He talks a good show and he backs it up with action.

I saw on the OS the other day that I could expect a cheerful message from the gaffer in the post. What a freakin' waste of money. What's that clichéd prick going to be able to say to get me to renew when a) I don't want to and 2) I couldn't afford to even if I wanted to?

Get real, Reading FC. Actually, no; get fucked.

Some people just don't get marketing, but that's a strangely bitter response.

I think they get it; they just like to think they're above getting 'sucked in' by it.

Maguire I got this yesterday and if i'm honest I don't think it really would've registered with me if there wasn't a thread about it. It's just standard marketing stuff, your eyes scan over it, pick out the relevant information (price and deadline) and put it aside.

I don't think that's the case. I think people get it completely, but are just reacting to the ludicrous hype from the club suggesting that this message is something special and that they're oh, so lucky to get a personalised message from the manager.

Because, if anything, the suggestion that this isn't anything other than bog-standard marketing seems to have come from the club itself.

Quite obviously you don't get it because the hype is a fundamental part of the marketing strategy.

I absolutely do get it - but if the club hype something up as being special and worthwhile, they can't be surprised at the derision when it turns out not to be.

I know enough about marketing to know that it's all tied up with setting expectations - building something up in advance to be something it's not and then failing to deliver will always be a marketing fail.

Woodcote Royal Frankly, I would have prefered it had everyone at the club just STFU rather than send this condescending sh*t through my letter box. Did you really think that putting my name on the back of an envelope with the word "hello" in front of it would get me reaching for my credit card as I called the ticket office

For the record, I will be renewing the ST I've held for more than a decade when I'm good and ready.

I'm not interested in meaningless platitudes from our new manager. I would, however, have been VERY interested to here from Mr Fat Wallet himself with regard to next season's transfer budget and the criteria he intends to apply come the day he decides that Adkins has outstayed his welcome.

Answers to this type of question would help me decide whether this will be my final campaign as a season ticket holder because, believe me, Sunshine, the jury is still out here

lol at these frothy reactions.

Up in arms? Hardly that - as I pile in on page 5 of the thread to make my opinion heard by answering a point made on the thread. In fact, I don't think I've actually commented on the content or the value of the message itself - just on the hyperbole that presaged it and, IMHO, devalued it.
