'greed. Lack of pace was exposed in the top flight but his ability more than made up for it the second tier. Wouldn't even have been too pissed off if we'd given him another season on the bench.

Guthrie got about 15 assists, mostly from set pieces, in this division last time he played in it...

Not necessarily our first choice for direct free kicks though

If there's one team that has shown fairly consistently over the past ten years or more that a team is always better than the sum of its parts, it's us. Wayne Bridge may be 33 come the start of the season, but if he fits in with the way Adkins wants us to play, there's no reason why his age should be an issue.

It's a little unfair to judge anyone on the strength of one transfer alone.

Harte performed wonders for 2 seasons, and adequately this season. Solid in defense, and influential in assisting and scoring plenty of goals.

He performed better for longer than any of the signings you just mentioned, and was more important to the way we played.

If I remember rightly, most fans slated him for buying Gorkks and Leigertwood, because they didnt cut it in the Premiership. And boy were they right when it came to our promotion. Roberts was brought in as a PL player with the sole aim of getting us up, which he did, and ALF came in with a reputation as a lower-league hot-shot with some expectations on his shoulders.

Most people, Reading fans and pretty much everyone else, gave a massive WTF when we signed Harte. As all of the others have simply met what was expected of them, and Harte far exceeded what was expected of him, I would say that makes him the best signing.

But then it’s pretty tricky to sign players while in the championship who will not only get you up but keep you up.

Define 'wonders'. Very average defender, often skinned for pace, chipped in with a couple of worldies. Can't imagine anyone saying 'thank god Harte's starting'. He did a job but Gorkss and Roberts won us promotion, Legs bossed countless games and scored the goal that sent us up.
