Maguire Summary from an Evertonian I went to aforementioned match with:

So first, the football. He is an absolutely brilliant player, he would
genuinely be one of the most talented players in the PL. He's a game
changer and will do some things which will have you shaking your head
in disbelief

He never got on with Moyes because he expects everyone to do their job
in the defensive unit and Drenthe wasn't really that interested in
that.

To get the best out of him you should just play him off a front man or
wide left and not ask anything of him defensively (or at least not
expect anything, he does surprise you every so often by pulling off a
great challenge)

In the negative column in terms of off the field, he is completely
mental. Not just a bit, I mean really bonkers. He comes from a
particularly nasty bit of Rotterdam and is reckoned to have ADD and
as a result really struggles to stay still/at home. Apparently alcohol
isn't so much the problem as he just can't switch off and so tends to
go out every night, he's also obsessively into music (he built a
recording studio in the basement of his rented accomodation within
about a week of signing for us)

The last straw when he left Everton was when, the Friday before we
played the filth in the cup semi, he was caught on CCTV breaking into
our training ground with two birds whom he proceeded to nail in the
gym (I shit you not)

In short, he's tremendous, I wish he still played/was banned from
playing for us because in the humdrum and mundanity of finishing 6th
(much like playing in the championship, I expect) he will provide
plenty of entertainment, good and bad. There aren't enough total
nutcases in the game these days, IMO

rofl, so much fro signing players who fit the Reading mould

Could he be our very own Balotelli? Or Reading FC's modern day Robin Friday.

I'm not looking forward to the #meltdown when we get Tommy Smith'd on this. It's gonna be a long few days.

I think we need confirmation of Billy Sharp in the meantime just to chill everyone out a tad

Is there not a slight whiff of irony/hypocrisy that he utilised a clause in his previous contract that meant he could leave if his team got relegated, to join another team that got relegated...?

Relegated from the best league in the world to a still very good league with a good chance of going straight back up > Relegated from a piss poor league into an even worse league.

Assumed he was 30-32 for some reason but pleased to see he's only 26! Feels like he's been around for ages. What a signing this would be.

looks like he's learnt his lesson about lack of discipline with his time with Moyes. I think this guy could rip up the championship.

If a player like Royston Drenthe is willing to join Reading it suggests a player who wants to rebuild his career, and sneak back into the premier league with us. Whether he actually can do that, because of his issues, is up in the air. He may not even be the same player if he hit rock bottom. But he's good enough to take the risk I think.

Well that's at least saying the right thing.

Really don't know anything about this guy. Caught the odd glimpse of him at Everton and wasn't particularly impressed. But then I also did think he was a striker and didn't know he'd been at Madrid. Even so he'd be a potentially excellent signing for us. If he's genuinely sorted himself out and is as good as many say then he'd be phenominal as a signing.

Five years ago, he was tearing up the U21 tournament and everybody wanted to sign him. Hence his move to Real Madrid. Now he's "on the verge" of signing for us?

It would be one of, if not the, biggest name signings in the Championship if it happens and also one of the biggest  ever.

What a save! Everton cast-off Drenthe thanks David Moyes for saving his career

Toffees boss "was right in every way. I was not living like a professional player in Liverpool - I had no discipline at all. I hit rock bottom"

Royston Drenthe has admitted Everton manager David Moyes saved him from ending up in the gutter.

Despite the fact that Moyes sent the ex-Real Madrid star packing, Drenthe is grateful for the Scot’s hard words.

“It was David Moyes who has opened my eyes," said 25-year-old Drenthe, who moved to Alania Vladikavkaz, 1200 miles south of Moscow.

“I am fighting for my last chance in life and in football. I have just lost a stone in weight.

“I can only say that Moyes was right in every way. I was not living like a professional player in Liverpool.

“I can try and come up with all sorts of excuses, but that is not fair on anyone. I look in the mirror and I have to admit that I had to stop living the way I did. All players love to go out and hit the town. But I had no discipline at all. I hit rock bottom.

“I was close to ending up on the street again where I once was before I became a footballer.’’

Drenthe was caught on camera breaking into Everton’s training ground with women. He also turned up for training smelling of booze.

Drenthe said: “I was living in a different world. And I realise I have ruined it all myself.

“I used to confront David Moyes, thinking I had the right to talk to him like that. But in hindsight, he was so right about me most times.

“Now I can’t believe I blew it at Everton. It is one of the most fantastic clubs in the Premier League.

“My attitude and poor mentality are the reasons I ruined my career there.’’

Football Family tweet suggests mixed reports from Holland. Apparently his family have denied he is moving to Reading. But somebody else has confirmed medical for next week.

Excited by the potential signing. Gamble though.
