URZZZZZ
FridaysGhost So far we have bought two real class players and have overcome the Pearce contract obstacles. Anton intimated that we were looking at up to five more players. I really like where we are going. O.K. We may have a few unwelcome bids from teams who want to pull our best players away but, they will be Championship or Premiership-relegation teams. Given our signings so far, why would anyone leave us (unless we want to get rid of the wages)? One can only salivate over who may next come into the club.

correction, we have not bought anyone, both on a free

Sorry, Mr Pedantic, but you know what I meant.

Looking at our current squad as we now stand. We need cover at LB but I haven't seen any rumours on that front. Berra would be a good addition at CB, he is available and left-footed. Also, I think he has a lot to give in a decent Championship team. Dorrans and Bridcutt are both persistent Midfield rumours but we probably need to get rid of a weak-link at the same time. I would add Vaz Te to that list (suddenly available), he is classed as a forward but seems to play very well behind the forwards with licence to roam. Up front, where we definately need a class striker to be a rock-solid squad, Beric, Hooper, Rhodes, Austin and Sharp are all persistent rumours. I know little about Beric, Sharp would be a good squad player but any of the others would be a real coup.

One thing, talking about good players coming in makes a huge change from a couple of years ago when it was a question of which star we would sell.

CHRIS BAIRD is wanted by Stoke, West Brom, QPR and Reading.

The midfielder, 31, is quitting Fulham after snubbing a deal.

There's no room for him. It's a rehashed rumour, we were linked at the same time we took Kelly, plus he's ex Southampton and they love that link.

All seems to have gone a little quiet. Wonder what is in the pipeline :?:

If we could get a top striker and maybe someone that can play the number 10 role i would be happy :D

We need a top striker, a good, promising, attacking midfielder and a young up and coming left back.

We also need to sell a keeper, a right back, a central midfielder (or perhaps 2) and a couple of attacking options.

I fully expect to see us playing 4-2-3-1 this season, so I suspect the striker will depend largely on what happens with Pog and Alfie - with those two and Blackman / Samuel for backup I can't see another striker coming in, so I think an incoming striker will signal that either Pog or Alfie is off...

It's a similar situation with the #10 - as has been mentioned on the Wingers thread in the team board, it's possible that we'll play with three interchangeable attacking midfield players, rather than an out and out #10 - given that we have Jobi, Kebe, HRK, McLeary and Drenthe, and Obita as backup we've got 3 from 6 with at least Jobi, HRK and Drenthe all capable of playing off a main striker.

In defensive midfield we've now got Williams/Karacan/Carrico/Leigertwood, at RB Kelly/Gunter, CB we've got Morrison/Pearce/Mariappa/Gorkks - LB is the only one I can see a gap with no specialist cover for Bridge, but with Cummings still around, we'd still have cover at RB if Kelly were to fill in at LB again...

In honesty I'd be pretty happy going into the season with what we have, but I reckon any more incoming players might be dependent on departures...

So our Striking options consist of...

Adam Le Fondre, Pavel Pogrebnyak, Nick Blackman and Jason Roberts. With McCleary / Hal being counted as wingers, in my mind leaves us light. Will Jason be the same player after this long injury break? What if Pavel or Adam get injured or worse, loose form - there will be no real competition for places.

We need a striker.

I just can't see us playing anything other than 1 upfront though. If you include Samuel in the above, then we have 5 strikers competing for 1 starting place...

2 first choice strikers (Alf, Pog- Same as last year), 1 Sub (Roberts- Better then Hunt), 2 Recognised backups (Blackman, HRK- Better than Church), 2 notable others (McCleary Samuel.) as good as we've had in the last few years. We don't need any more if they all stay.

Senior/Horrix/Bremner & Fozzie/Curo/Butler & Lita/Doyle/Kitson & Long/NHunt etc etc >>>>>>>>>> Alfie/Pog.

Self explanatory.

Yeah, but they were all mainly played as 4-4-2....can't see us playing two upfront unless we're behind and chasing a game so with 4 recognised 1st team strikers on the books, plus Samuel, I think we have enough - if we do see a striker come in, it'll most likely see either ALF or Pog go IMO...

I can see us playing 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 at home and 4-5-1 away against strong opposition (4-4-2 otherwise). Why does everyone think that we have anything like the striking power that we need? Particularly as we may get bids for current members of the Strike Force.
