Case Study: New Website

I'm going to be putting together a design for a new website concept for Reading FC, It'll be purely for my portfolio unless they choose to develop it

I'd love to get your feedback on things you'd want on the homepage of a theoretical new website, and what you feel is most important, and also what you feel doesn't work on the current website.
I'm hoping this thread gets as much support as my posts do in the Kit Threads, I'm going to be including this site design on my CV and Portfolio while applying for a design job at the club (which many of you have suggested to me for some time)

It would be impossible to make a worse website than the current one.

It should be fast and clean, and the first page should be the latest news.

Really hate the cookies pop up window when you first log on. I realise they have to notify you in some way but they could make it more discreet like other websites.

The whole layout is so busy and cluttered I rarely even bother with the OP these days.

The OS is cluttered, unfriendly and it keeps sending me to pages I didn't want.
It would be nice to go to a site that felt like it was there for my interest rather than to trick the reader into I increasing the number if hits and trying to get me to sign up to its crummy Player service.
A bit of retro stuff would be good especially in the close season. Maybe stuff on more general football news would be useful. New laws of the game, financial fair play, EPPP etc rather than player interviews where they never say anything.
