Yep Obita looked good. No reason he shouldn't be competing for a spot if he continues like that.

He's probably the best crosser of the ball of the wingers that played today, imo

LOL @ Mandy

Summary of the match:

Too many long balls
Too much wing play/need to play through central midfield more (Guthrie+Williams solid)
Drenthe is class
Obita is class
It wasn't a pen

ZacNaloen Do think there is an element of experimentation in this shape

If the experiment was combining the worst aspects of a direct McDermott esque style with a tippy tappy Rodgers esque style, it's not far off. Only a friendly though, they're a decent looking side and it's about fitness more than anything.

Think you're being rather harsh there IR, kept a very decent side at arm's length for the majority of the game and created a few good chances of our own. Not close to being perfect, but plenty of encouragement from the new boys and Obita.

Absolutely. I expected something rather different from Adkins after seasons of watching us with no quality ball in the centre of the park. Karacan today was back to his old self after looking a different player under Adkins competitively. BUT it is only a friendly. And it's years since I watched a friendly. 2009 I think.

I liked the look of Obita. ALF's doing what ALF does: score. McAnuff is looking productive as ever. Akpan showed some promise. Drenthe a bit off the pace but skilled. Taylor did nicely. Bridge was good. Williams was good.

I'd be interested to see what a midfield of Williams and Akpan looked like with them actually operating within supporting distance of each other and around the centre circle. At the moment it looks to me like Guthrie / Karacan and Williams / Akpan. With Guthrie / Karacan doing the play making from deep. More likely to work with someone like McAnuff / Drenthe / HRK sitting between midfield and the striker, sometimes dropping deep, sometimes bursting forward to join the attacker.

Sounds like Obita was good then. I remember seeing him in a friendly at Northampton 2 years ago, thought he looked awesome. Surprised Brian never gave him a chance. Hope he gets one this season.

Remember listening to the Reading Sheff Weds game last year and although it was only a pre-season friendly, I got the feeling that we were doomed.

This one sounded much more encouraging and sounded entertaining for a friendly.

Get a grip some of you. It's a friendly against a team nobody has heard of. I've heard of the Portuguese team though.

Agreed m8 - LOL @ her for spending her time, money and using Annual Leave from work to go and watch us play some 1,400 miles away. Have you been on a foreign pre-season tour before btw?

FWIW - I'm not surprised the players didn't acknowledge those fans who traveled - as it goes, they can barely be phucked to do it on these shores nevermind elsewhere.

Isn't Mandy the absolute horrificcunt that pops up on BBCRB after every game bitching about how she's entitled to all the inside info from the club because she's a loyal royal? Maybe the players knew just how appaling she is?

That was a bit of a shambles, hopefully the club will now realise we need another 2 or 3 big signings to be in with a chance of promotion this season.

What?? No playing out from the back, keeping posession of the football, playing through the thirds of the pitch and being effective in both boxes?
