As well as learning from the weaknesses of the side he left behind here, and the way he'd put it together, he's probably quite aware of the desires of the Elland Road crowd.

They don't want to be a long ball team. They hanker for a passing team who can wow the football world as any team should do when they grace their turf. That's how they'll see it, and I'm sure it was one of the criticisms of Warnocks side, and there's no way McDermott (or any other manager) is going to go in there saying they'll play percentage football and work the channels until the opposition make a mistake. That's not going to get the fans on side.

Jem Karacan given a chance to shine by new boss Nigel Adkins
19 Jul 2013 11:43

The midfielder admits he felt held back under previous manager Brian McDermott

Jem Karacan says he has had the shackles taken off his game since the arrival of Nigel Adkins.

The midfielder admits he felt held back under previous manager Brian McDermott, who used him more as a disruptive player in the middle of the park.

Karacan insists he has always had more to offer than that and is now being given the chance to express himself.

He said: “The gaffer has come in and helped me get my confidence back in terms of being a passing player.

“I think towards the end of last season that showed more and more.

“Even Tuesday’s game it was good having the confidence to get on the ball every time and not be afraid losing it.

“I think that’s massively helping my game and helping me improve as a player.

“The gaffer has given me a license and I’m loving every single minute of it and I’m positive about the coming year.”

Looking back to his time under the previous manager, Karacan felt his game was under-used by McDermott.

Instead of being a player who looked to move forward, he always found himself having to try and disrupt the opposition.

“It was frustrating for myself in certain aspects of my game,” he said.“Sometimes I felt a little bit held back.

“You’d be hearing people saying, ‘get him on the ball, get him on the ball and then Jem you just get about, hassle players and get around the pitch.’

“I know that’s part of my game and I’m lucky to have a natural energy but I’ve always wanted to be the guy who’s on the ball and take the game by the scruff of its neck.

“It just becomes frustrating when you’re not able to express yourself as much as you can.”

Despite the frustration he felt during McDermott’s time in charge, Karacan insists it never crossed his mind to complain.

The 24-year-old could see his methods were working on the pitch so was happy to do as asked.

He said: “It’s always the manager’s decision.

“I was never going to bang on the door and say I can do this and I can do that.

“Especially when I was playing quite well and we were winning promotion to the Premier League.

“I’m never going to be one that goes banging or knocking on doors saying we should change style.

“For me, there was nothing to really speak about.

“I was doing my job day in, day out.

“I was keeping my shirt and that’s what I always wanted to do.”

Karacan added: “I’ll never have a bad word to say about Brian.

“He got us promoted, he took us from near relegation to winning the league the next season.

“He made me a Premier League player and he gave me the chance to play at Wembley.

“There’s loads of things I learned under him and it was a brilliant part of my career.”

So now that's Jem, ALF and Guthrie that have openly questioned McDermott.

Carriço had 'an incident' with the manager.

Anyone else that McDermott oxf*rd up?

Fall-outs with Federici and Pog was open about discussing his future with AZ if he didn't start getting games. I think Brian pretty much pissed off everyone but his favourites. He's a likable guy but he lost his way, his football was dated, and he had players that could do more if they were allowed to do it (Guthrie, Karacan to name just two).

Talk, talk, talk. Not necessarily a good thing to like your manager and, conversely, not always a bad thing to dislike your manager. Let's see if the "liking of the manager and his methods" translates to winning games. If it does, then woopey doo, it's win-win - players happy AND performing. If it doesn't then I don't want to hear how 'happy' the players are...

You sure? I think Leicester and Bolton fans would disagree, with some strong English to boot.

Always rated him when he played for us, despite getting a lot of shit from our fans. Haven't seen him for Leicester or Bolton, so can't comment, but 27 is a good age for a CB and he'll do very well if Brian can get him back to his best.

Because new stories keep coming about his limitations as a manager and we are interested in the signings he is making and the apparent new footballing philosophy he wants to install in Leeds.
