6 keepers, 1, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61.

Maybe his squad number is a hint at Jobi's best position..... :|

Midfielder in the development squad. Had a couple in pre-season from the spot so far, seems to be a bit more of a focus in the team than last year in the first couple of games.

Hector missing. I assume that is just an error.

Eh?!

Think Bridge likes the number 18 otherwise I guess he'd have got number 3 - in which case it's no surprise to see Kelly getting that number.

Akpan and Blackman also move up - who was 22 last year?! Thought Williams might be a bit higher than 23 - again a favoured number perhaps? Think he'll be playing a lot this season.

Why does Andersen have a number when he's out on loan for the season.

Carrico has a number as well - maybe it's in case we recall them.

Theoretically his loan could be cancelled. In that case he'd be ahead of Taylor, Henly, Lincoln and Moore, so I guess he's been given that number to indicate that.

Jon Henly getting 42 and breaking the pattern for goalkeepers:lol:

I don't know why Carrico has a number though.

It seems we've given every player that's on a professional contract a number - including the ones that are out on loan for the season...

Looking a little like Federici has snuck his way back to first choice having played more preseason and keeping number 1. Maybe McCarthy'll get the full game against Swansea though.

I'd be surprised if we leave August with both still at the club though...

I wouldn't read much into squad numbers to see who would be playing during a season. The play may pick a certain number for themselves, or the club decided that there was little, or no point changing the numbers for players (except for the January signings).

I assumed the reason McCarthy didn't play last night is because he'll play the full game on Sat. I'm sure he'll be first choice.

Yeah providing he's still here and fit I'd firmly expect McCarthy to start the season as our first choice - I'd expect him to start against Swansea at the weekend. Wasn't he given extra time off because of his England duty so that's presumably why he's played a bit less in preseason?

It seems quite rare clubs give a player still at the club a lower number as it's effectively a clear demotion. Obviously in some special cases it will happen (a bit like last year when we'd made a number of 'big name' signings and so reasonably long-term players in Tabb and Bryn got given different numbers.) But if there's still a reasonably close level between two players I think it's unlikely they'd change even if the guy with the lower number is the preferred option, particularly if there's doubt about whether he'll even still be there come the end of the transfer window.

IIRC according to the Reading website he had a long-term injury last season, hence why he appears to have popped out from nowhere.
