have we ever spent over the odds?

With our recent lull in activity in the transfer market it led me to wondering have we ever spent over the odds on a player? With the premiss that you have to speculate to accumulate and (we all know what happens every time we get promoted) is this lack of risk taking holding us back . I can think of a few going back as far as the Burns era but not much since. Forget about wages as we are never sure about these but actual transfer fees. Also what in your opinion were our best and worse buys?

Best buys have to be Doyle / Long and probably Senior, because not only did we buy them cheap and sell them big relative to the times, but they also delivered massively over a few seasons before leaving...

Worst for me is Fae and Halford because of the fee and what they gave us...

Everything's relative, Steve Moran and Craig Maskell for £250k were hideous by our standards in the late 80's/early 90's. Meaker in the swap deal for Simon Osborn was crap, Barry Hunter was supposedly the Adrian Williams replacement and at £400k was overpriced. Then you start to get into the realms of Tommy Burns signings, all bar 2 or 3 were horrendous buys at any price (Murty, Forster and McIntyre arguably).

Kitson, whilst not in the same league as Doyle and Long in the cheap stakes, was still cheap as chips and sold for mega bucks considering his impact here. I guess you could argue that we've actually spent significantly more on Doyle and Long than their fees reflect seeing as I doubt we'd have bought those turkeys Mooney and Bennett without their success for a pittance.

Shorey another great bargain. Plus Ingimarsson. The list of great bargains is almost too full to list the best of them.

Fae has to be the worst. He was meant to replace Sidwell. In hindsight we should have just given Sids the 2;5 million he would have kept us up and paid it back in one season.

I'll probably get shot to pieces for this, but in terms of what we paid for him, Bobby Convey only really delivered in one season.

He was one of my favorite players at the time, mainly because of champ man, but to compare his impact to Murtys, you would have to say that value for money he was not.

Caskey almost single handedly saved us from relegation with his free kicks - the fat ****
