Football Returns

by One8Seven1 » 03 Aug 2013 18:01

Cracking result for Yeovil at Millwall today, and I had to laugh at Pompey who have been outspokenly confident about a quick return to League 1 this season and got walloped 4-1 at home to Oxford. Also a superb return to the Football League for Newport who won 4-1 at home to Accrington Stanley (who are they? exactly).

Early days in each league....its pretty much a false dawn and a great unknown (just as to who your team really is going to be this season)....until the August window closes.

Apparently, the Pompey game was the biggest ever crowd for that level.......I'm sure some of our forefathers would beg to differ.

Yes, cracking result for Yeovil, would really like to see them ruffle some big-gun feathers this season. Ultimately coming second to us in the promotion race.

a quite wiki check shows...

The highest average league attendance in the Fourth Division was 19,092, achieved by Crystal Palace in the 1960/61 season. The highest attendance at an individual match was recorded the same season: 37,774 for the Good Friday game at Selhurst Park between Crystal Palace and Millwall.

So yes, complete bollocks from someone who appears to think "that level" only existed after being renamed "League Two"

Add Sheffield United in Division Four to that list. They averaged nearly 15,000 in 1981-82 when it was a different era for crowds in peak 80s recession football dog days. Lets wait and see what the sailor boys crowds are like across the whole season.

How come barton's 10 match ban isn't still in place over here? Surely it should only count in UK - and did he miss 10 games in France in any case? :|

The ban moved with him to France.

Well, I guessed that was the case, but he was banned under PL rules wasn't he - so it should mean he can't play in UK for 10 games really - not that I think he'll make any difference to QPR's team and he'll probably get sent off again within weeks anyway!

Only got round to watching the Football League show last night, and I noticed a lot of ex Royals getting mentions on there - Antonio with chances for Wednesday, James Henry missing chances for Millwall, Scott Golbourne with a goal line clearance for Barnsley, and Simon Cox for Forest

I realise we've got quite a few of our ex players out there now, but it just seemed to be a weekend where a lot of them got a mention for one reason or another in the highlights
