We get offered £1m for Federici and £3m for McCarthy. Which one would you take?

£1m for Federici. It's a fair price, McCarthy's value is likely to climb and he's likely to improve. Especially if he can sort out his kicking. We have Taylor as cover. Andersen may be persuaded to stay if he's second choice rather than third. We've also got other young keepers.

We can use the money and the leeway in wages to sign someone in a position we're weaker.

But £3m for McCarthy would probably be hard to resist.

If 20 thousand of us all chipped in fifty quid each, then we'd have the £1M required to get rid of Federici .........

Sell McCarthy before clubs realise he can't kick.

Tokyo Sex Whale I don't care too much he "can't kick" if he consistently pulls off saves Feds or other keepers wouldn't.

Seeing as our manager and every manager now likes his keepers to have a wide range of passing I'd say an ability to kick is actually quite important.

and yet adkins prefers him to fed. His long kicking is poor. But his throwing and short distribution is better.

Tokyo Sex Whale Yeah, but the question wasn't which one would adkins take, it was which one would I take.

Yeah I don't really care what the question was.

However, £3m wouldn't be that "ridiculous" because an ability to distribute the ball effectively is a major part of a top keepers game now.

As Ian Royal mentioned, McCarthy's long kicking isn't very good but the rest of his distribution is quite good and I'd argue he's more comfortable looking to release it short that Federici now is (I think Federici is in the habit of kicking it long and I, probably harshly, can picture him practising his kick and pose in front of the mirror because he thinks his style is so good).

Crucially it's Adkins, a man who's said how much he likes his keepers to be able to distribute well, who is picking the side and has gone for McCarthy over Federici.

I'd sell Federici for £1m without any problem. My only reservation is that I'm not sure how long we'd be able to keep hold of McCarthy if he continues to progress and so in 12 months time we might have £6m+ in the bank but neither good goalkeeper between the sticks.

Also, teaching a goal keeper to kick the ball is probably one of the easiest skills to teach.

Good point.

If the OP posed the question: "We get offered £1m for Federici and £6m for McCarthy. Which one would you take?" I am pretty sure people would think harder about it.

If it was that easy then he'd have learnt it to a better degree by now especially given the fact he has come through an academy set up. I watched him in the warm up on Saturday and he was nowhere near the level you'd expect a top keeper to be whereas Federici hit the ball accurately every time.

All I'm saying is if he is to go for big money and become a top keeper then he needs to improve drastically because the best like Casillas, Neuer and Valdes are all comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Perhaps McCarthy's distribution could be better, but he's and excellent shot stopper and I'd take that over distribution any day. The way we're going to be playing under Adkins allows McCarthy's long balls to be a little bit naff as hopefully he won't be required to play to many of them. As mentioned further up the thread he's perfectly comfortable with the most intricate, shorter passes and that's the kind of pass he's gunna be using most of the time. I couldn't care less what other clubs may be expecting from him or what he needs to be a top top keeper - if/when he becomes a top top keeper he won't be playing for us.
