winchester_royal I think there's a reasonable chance Nige will leave of his own volition if things don't go particularly well in the transfer market over the next few days. Clear signs of frustration.

I don't think there's a reasonable chance at all tbh. Will hold my hands up if i'm wrong but he's got no grounds for complaint having been allowed to sign players like Bridge and Drenthe on massive wages.

No idea why people on here think the size of the transfer fee is significant in the quality of the player, as if Drenthe is somehow worse because we got him on a free. I get the impression Reading fans would be more impressed if we'd bought him for 4 million pounds rather than for nothing, which is kind of backwards.

I can't see any way Adkins would resign and there's absolutely no way he should be sacked until he's given a good crack at it. Whichever ever way you look at it though, losing 6-0 to a League One team is slightly worrying. Regardless of the fact that it was our second string, that group of players should not be capitulating like that. Could Adkins have a slight issue with how he deals with the players who aren't first choice, I'm not sure, but something isn't quite right there?

And yes we could do with another couple of players, certainly a striker, but even the current group of players should be good enough for at least the top six. Our defence should be one of the best in the Championship.

I think the work done earlier in the summer was great, don't get me wrong, and I don't really think Nige has much cause for complaint given the depth of 'quality' in the squad, but he sounded pretty down last night. Could be more to do with the fact he'd just seen his team get thumped 6-0 of course...

I thought he might have changed things at half time, like bring on Royston or something,Dunno why he chose not to.It may be a tin pot cup but its a tin pot cup with a europa league place avalible.Changing things around could have at the very least possibly limited the damage.Boro are a good side but its still very embarassing

Aslong as he wants as he will be a success at this club! hes transforming the way we play and it will show before the end of the season. Getting knocked out of that cup is a blessing in disguise! they just get in the way of preparing and focusing for league games, carling cup are good for mid table teams to excite the fans. We are a top team in this league and we need to concentrate on winning LEAGUE games.

Last night we were a shambles to say the least but it was a bit of a freak result.

We've had a tough start in th league and lost 1-0 to Blackpool who are currently top

'Oh yes but that's because there are only a few games played' I'm sure some will say.

Er, so why are we some crapping themselves on here?

We don't have the right to go back as champions either.
Nor does Arry at QPR.

How many of you really thought we would win every game 4-0 and be promoted by Christmas?

Don't sack him, its only August 28 back on Planet Earth.

That would also cost us loads in order to pay of his contract. Football Managers aren't like many other jobs; their agents always make sure they get paid even after a 'sacking'

Get behind the team; they will need it as I know many supporters are saying they won't go again this year (yeah right) soyGet behind the team; even if you [currently] dont like Adkins

Sorry for all the typos edits, I'm doing this on a smart phone on a train :)

hedgehog Hmmm non of this is a surprise "The squirrel from the Wirral " is not a Reading man,his record with us to date is dire,he is an Arsey Scouser he just does not fit in here he clearly cant handle the squad he has inherited, he cant handle the press and he cant win football games, at least Brian had 13 years helping building our club and could win a football match when given the proper support, as for Aton " you fired Brian McDermott and you spent fcuk all " says it all. Lots more misery to come I expect.

Why don't you concentrate on your own job McDermott?!

I am glad he didn't bring subs on, because these defeats affect morale and the fewer players tainted by it the better. We don't want it infecting more of the first team players. Basically, he was saying, you lot got us in this mess, now get us out of it.

*

I do not want Adkins sacked of course. Even if we go on a long bad run, I'd give him the season. I am always in favour of keeping managers, even Rodgers, to give them a chance to get somewhere.

Having said that, Adkins has not impressed me yet. People say they prefer his style of play, but I actually liked the McDermott way, particularly the gritty tackling. Frankly, when Karacan and Leigertwood were in harness and at their best, with Tabb in reserve, it was the best defensive midfield I have ever seen at Reading. No shortage of entertainment for me in seeing them tackle the opponents into the ground.

I know Adkins needs time, but so far his teams do not appear to me to have a coherent style. He is also a manager, like Rodgers, whose selections I often question, whereas I used to trust Coppell and McDermott. Adkins is making errors of judgement, it seems to me: last night, for example, I do not think he put enough in midfield to hold off a team like Peterborough.

Given the references regarding Kebe, I suspect this is the "really" bad news and tonights result merely a symptom of deeper routed unrest in the camp.

This squad is under performing massively and tonights team was packed with those who have not been making the league team (plus Kebe was clearly fit for Blackpool but didn't even get a place on the coach (great piece of management that, Nige :| )

If Kebe had got on the coach there is a very strong chance that he would have picked up an 'injury' like he did before! Surely the only professional player ever to get 'injured' on a coach ride?! Kebe had no god given right to walk straight back into the team when he decided he had recovered from the 'injury' that prevented him assisting in the fight against relegation last season. Good bit of management by Nigel and also smart of him to make that very point (i.e. injured players needing a reality check if they thought they had the right to walk straight back into the team having been out long term) in Saturday's post match interview.

Should never have appointed Adkins in the first place.

Should never have sacked McDermott.

Get someone else in.

Here we go again....we were going stale with McD and he was too loyal to certain players, probably in the vain hope that they would become good again. We have to give NA a chance, though, last night was disappointing and some of his team selections have been questionable, I can see how he is trying to play much better football than we did under McD - no more hoof and hope for a start. We have to give him time, but, equally, if during the time we give him (2 seasons in my view) nothing improves dramatically, we need to get shot and try and find someone who will either be happy to perform on a limited budget or who will be able to bring in better quality players, though that means spending more money of course.

For goodness sake, we are changing the system. We sacked Rodgers look where he is now, Liverpool could finish in the top five this season in the Premiership.

Look at the record of Atkins, lots of promotions had produced a Southampton team which was coming together well in the Prem when he was sacked for political reasons.

The man needs time, we have a good spine to the team. One of the top three English goalkeepers, three great backs, one of the best midfields in the division. We lack forwards , we have players who I think are probably disrupting the dressing room. Kebe should have been suspended for calling Radio Berkshire and undermining NA. The man is a permanent sick note ,I don´t know if he did say he didn´t want to play for Reading again after McDermott was sacked, I would suspect it was true. The Pog terrible situation like a cancer in the club, obviously no interest in playing for the club can´t we just pay the bastard off and help him pack his bags back to Russia.Roberts should have been paid off to not given a new contract, I have to work hard for my money no one pays me for doing nothing.Even if he comes back in September his contribution will be nil until Christmas due to his age and the seriousness of his injury, so that is one year of not playing.

Look how long it took Sir Steve to turn things round, and he inherited a good, possibly great side from Pardew. Rome was not built in a day, even God took six days to build the world.

Nigel Atkins inherited a team in tatters ,no confidence ,no leadership getting beaten out of sight every week. I saw the game ,I think it was the 3rd or 4th last season home to Spurs, and I said to a friend "This team is totally lacking quality, we can´t pass the ball more five yards the midfield is a joke, the attack non existent". Don´t get me wrong , what Brian Mc Dermott did for us was nothing short of a miracle, maybe the Premiership was a league too far for him. He handled players badly bought quantity rather than quality, the one quality player he bought he handled really badly. I know the club is bigger than any player, but most players in the Premiership are Prima donas. Some have to be treated with kid gloves, others need discipline. Brian seemed incapable of getting it right.

When a team is on a long losing run , it is a bit like a boxer who keeps getting hit it becomes more and more depressed players blame each other for mistakes, problems develope in the dressing room. It takes a long time to turn things around. We have a large squad, players have high opinions of themselves, Federici probably thinks he should be No 1 goalie,Mariappa thinks he should be playing, etc etc There is a lot of dead wood in the squad, get rid of Kebe, Roberts ,the Pog for starters. Nearly everyone raves about Drenthe ,but what has he done really? Not a lot . Came in on silly money, is a nutty as a 10 bob watch, has caused mayhem everywhere he has been.

We will recover from this defeat. If we do not sign anyone by next Monday ,I can see Atkins resigning. I just hope we do not panic a la Rodgers and sack him. The history of Russian ownership of British football clubs and other countries as well, does not inspire me with confidence. They want success quickly if doesn´t come, they react strangely hiring and firing managers at will or walking off.

"Poyet or O´Neill", the former is a loose canon the second seems well past the sell by date. Perhaps when Di Canio is sacked from Sunderland we should appoint him. We have a great manager who inherited a woeful team, give him time and we will have a mid table Premiership side in a couple of years.

Knowing Reading we will probably slaughter Yeovil at the weekend.

In the long term NA will take us further. With BMD we would have gone down but would have been in a worse position.

You tossers gave Coppell 3 years to sort his team out, 3 years for McDermott to get it right and now you want Adkins sacked after 3 months of competitive games? I'd have thought some of you might have learnt from our playoff defeat to Brendan Rodgers' Swansea and his rise to the Liverpool job while we're no better off than 4 years ago, but idiots never cease to amaze.

Good post Royalee.

What we need is a manager that stays long term, the trouble is at this level you find a good one, and they either walk out, Pardew, McGhee, or when we have a bad season they get sacked, Coppell, McDermott.

The real thing is the owner, where is he, is he saying anything?

Things seem stale above the manager IMHO, we really did sign some rubbish in the last two years, who scouted them, do we even have scouts anymore>?
