ScepticalRoyal The result doesn't really bother me at all. I just wanted to know if we looked broken after the departure of 2 top players.

What, the two players who haven't featured in the league this season?

Correct. It wasn't that bad. Oman were plucky and REALLY wanted it.

Our first team has only failed to score in one competitive match out of five.

Or - put another way - Reading have failed to score, from open play, in their last four matches!

North Somerset Royal No it's £8 and annual permits are not valid - one of the many reasons I am out.
was that £8 levy really necessary today?

I went to the game. Crowd was about 3,000. £10 for adults and £5 for kids. Plus an outrageous £8 to park. However, I saw more Reading fans walking out of the free park and ride spaces in to the stadium than mugs like me who actually paid the £8!

First half was as close to a first team as he could select:

Taylor
Kelly, Pearce, Morro, Griffin
Jem, Guthrie, Williams
ALF, Pog, Drenthe

There were a few subs after 45 and then 65 mins or so and we ended up with this:

Taylor
Kelly, Pearce, Morro, Griffin
Tshibola (HT), Akpan (HT), Williams
Blackman (65), Ugwu (65), Obita (65)

First half we were out played by a skillful team. Kelly was sloppy passing inaccurately most of the time, Williams also gave up possession a lot. The midfield created nothing and the strikers were ineffective and lacked cohesion. Pog actually won a few headers but no-one was close enough to him. Pog was pretty hopeless - more effort than usual but he is still slow and cannot control a ball. Pearce, Morro and Karacan did OK.

2nd half we were much better. We had almost all of the ball and created a few chances that were largely wasted with inaccurate finishing. The younger players were definitely more up for it (as you'd expect), but they also looked more penetrating too. Obita was the definite man of the match, beating his full back at will, putting in dangerous crosses and going close with a few spectacular shots. Ugwu was better than Pog, running into the channels with pace, but his first touch let him down a few times. Blackman was hopeless as usual. Tshibola played as the holding midfielder and was probably the most impressive midfielder for us in the 2nd half. It was interesting also that he got on ahead of Jake Taylor and D'Ath who are obviously out of the picture and may as well go on loan I think.

Griffin looked Ok. He didn't look out of place but was at fault for the first goal as he mis-timed an interception and left his man to run in on goal. Taylor looked cumbersome in goal and was very slow to get down to the shot that beat him for their first goal.

My main issue is the lack of ambition in the passing. Our game plan seems to be get the ball back to the centre backs and pass it around between them. I am all for keeping possession and passing through the opposition rather than hoofing it, but we seem intent on passing BACK through the opposition to our defenders rather than up to the attackers. Morro actually looked good on the ball, but that is not really the point. In the second half we had lots of ball but created little until Obita came on.

Was it worth £18 with parking? Probably not! But better than having no game to watch. Based on that performance, Obita, Ugwu and Tshibola should be in the match day squad ahead of Pog, Blackman and Akpan - but I bet none of them are in the squad on Sunday!

I noticed the first really strong anti-Adkins sentiments from the fans, with more sarcasm than criticism (gallows humour), but there were a few boos and shouts of rubbish as the game ended...

ReadingRooney Hello,

I am new to this forum and will be visiting my first game this Saturday as Reading take on Oman at the Madejski Stadium. I will be bringing my son, Michael, of 3 years, my other son, Jacob, of 2, and my wife, Margaret, of 54. I anticipate that I will be seated in the West Stand, as I have been told that the East Stand is for drunken brutes, and I prefer an atmosphere that you'd associate with cricket, more than the stereotypical 'who are ya*?' dribble that comes with the beautiful game.

I am wondering, how would I get to the Madejski Stadium? I am currently living in Oxford and have supported the mighty Royals for just over 5 months now.

Thank you for your help, fellow R's! COME ON THE BOYS IN BLUE AND WHITE.

* ya = you.

Lamest wind-up ever. Saddest thing is you think you're hilarious don't you?

comfortable win for palace

by paddy20 » 11 Sep 2013 16:55

I see Palace had a comfortable 2-0 win against Oman last night.Palace's team included reserves and some of those that did not make the squad. This time last year we would have been expected to beat Palace comfortably. Think we have to accept we are no longer promotion contenders but in transition with little likelihood of strengthening the squad in January. For those of us that can remember the old Reading then our main aim will be to stabilise the team to stay in the champ. What a shame!
