*SPECULATION* Oguchi Onyewu

by 5cotland » 10 Sep 2013 12:11

This guy is an absolute beast. He was unlucky with injuries in 2011/12 but this guy can do a job for most teams. He played for AC Milan for free for a season. He's 31 Years old and has an immense amount of international and european experiance.

He is currently without a club but what are you thoughts on someone like him playing for the royals as a replacement for Mariappa.

Not sure, looks like he managed less than 30 games in the last four seasons

Nicky Hammond I've heard Onyewu will play for free... We're a VERY ambitious, got a Russian owner and everything... Can we do a deal?

I did see that, he has great pedigree though and if he was first pick he would be very consistent.

I forgot to mention that he broke Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Ribs in a fight :D

I didn't suggest he would play for free, I merely stated that he went a whole season without pay which seems like hes not a money grabber like most of the worlds footballers. If he joined a club I doubt he would try and break the bank in terms of wages.

I was just interested to see what the opinions were on him and if you think He could do a job at Reading or whether he is out of reach for a team like Reading.

I know you didn't. Doesn't mean Hammond's eyes wouldn't light up...

He holds a Belgian passport from his time at Standard Liege. I honestly think this guy is a diamond in the rough and would be a rock at the back.

At 31, with his injury history? That's not a diamond, that's a piece of glass with sharp edges..

Would love to see him join especially cause he's from my hometown. He'd be our (USA's) bonafide #1 defender if it wasn't for injuries which would make his signing a gamble. Physically, he is a monster but lacks some pace. He'd most definitely be an upgrade to gorky for sure. I know he's desperately wanted by the MLS, but he wants to play a few more years in europe. Don't think it will happen but one can wish.

Think we looked at him back in 06/07 iirc ?

For that reason, I'm OUT.

It's nice to have his agent on the board nonetheless.

He's a beast (if he can pass a medical.) Wish he was in the US squad for the Mexico game tonight.

While we're on the topic of American backs, Hammond should keep an eye on Sheanon Williams at Philadelphia Union. He's easily the best right back in MLS and can play CB as well. Known for good aerial work and he can whip throw-ins into the box like corner kicks. Only 23 and on a reported $105k USD/year (MLS pays peanuts compared to Championship.)

They're as useful as a corner and cause all sorts of problems for the defending side. If we you have a long throw specialist in your side, you should take advantage of it.

Corners are hardly goal magnets and long throws are a shit version of corners. They're almost without exception unremittingly shit. They've been of oxf*rd all benefit to Reading whenever we've had someone who was allegedly a long throw specialist. They're even shitter than short corners. Which I also hate with a oxf*rd passion.

7 out of Stoke's first 13 goals last season came from long throws

Think that stat just proves how utter crap Stoke were at scoring proper goals last season. Unfortunately, still better than we were :(
