Kaka returning to AC Milan was an interesting one. He seemed to be unstoppable at one point when he won the World Player of the Year in 2007 while playing for Milan and yet seemed to very quickly fade away thereafter.

Didn't live up to his billing at Real Madrid and you would wonder whether Gareth Bale can live up to the hype or if he gets weighed down by similar expectations. Kaka's best years are probably behind him but AC Milan might be hoping to get back what's left of his old self being as he's worshipped there.

He didn't want to leave AC last time though, did he? - didn't he feel like he was being forced out of the club (i remember Man City were very close to getting him before Real came in)

My point exactly where you can't judge a signing until 6 months, a year down the line. Really don't get it when people say "It's a great signing". On paper, perhaps. But in reality who knows how a player will adapt to another club. As you say, Kaka was a shadow of himself at Real.

Isn't it pretty similar to saying, say "Chelsea have got a better team than Man Utd this year"? It might be borne out by the next 6 - 12 months, or it might not. Even if Man Utd finish above Chelsea you might say "Chelsea had the better players but underperformed" in the same way as you could say "It was a great signing that didn't work out."

Signing Ozil on a free would be a great signing because of the very high probability of value for money. A mediocre performance from him wouldn't make that any less true. It would have been a great signing that didn't work out.

There's a keeper playing in the Primeira Liga as well, English. Got dropped at a youngish age, went over to the States and then back to Europe via a team in the Azores.

I'm a personal fan of the German players with English backgrounds. Hunt and Holtby would probably walk into England squads if they'd had an English footballing background. Still, only Germany, guess they'll make do.
