This one has reared its head again with the people and mail suggesting he's out of contract in the summer and we are interested... slow news day perhaps?

Could be that Tottenham might be willing to cash in now rather than him leave for nothing in the summer

Always came across as a bit flash but he can hit a ball. What about that volley for Spurs against Arsenal or the long range screamer against us for Blackburn? Or the famous punt into a builder's skip on Youtube?..............go on, have a look.

Don't think he'd add much to our current squad though.

Still available on a free. Part of my brain says, can play just off a striker and is a creative player. Give him a 3 month deal and see how it works out. The other part says big time Charlie who we should keep clear of.

Is the first part of your brain that you mentioned that part that makes you 'special'? The second part of your brain seems much more sensible.

B-Mac has denied reports saying he's interested. May be a good signing then...?

Is he still concentrating on his senior England career?

Yeah his scouting/signing of these where awful Doyle, Long, Kitson, Kebe, Alf, Legs, Roberts.....

All transfers have some risk but when you work on the cheap you have to take big gambles, some will work out and some won't. Bentley could be worth a punt on a 3 month contract on the other hand might not be depends on wages and attitude.

Yeah we went from signing the cheap Doyle, Long and Kitson's of this world to the cheap Shepperd, Williams, Williams etc of this world.

Coppell leaving and Brian coming had nothing to do with this clearly

So the chief scout had nothing to do with those signings?

I have a funny feeling that this has reared it's head before. and that someone said Doyle and Long were a recommendation from Dolan, rather than being someone BMc (or anyone else at the club) found themselves. Certainly, whichever way you look at it, BMc's finds subsequent to that golden patch were patchy. After all, if he 'spotted' Doyle and Long (which as stated I am pretty certain he didn't) then he also spotted Fae and Cisse within a similar time frame.

Anyway, back on subject. Have always thought Bentley was a bit of a kn*b but would be worth a 3 month contract to see if he has still got any desire (with the proviso that there is an automatic upgrade until end of season if we want him to stay, no point in him playing his socks off and then going back to the PL in January).

as a scout its all about your percentage that go on to success, and brian had a very decent record in a cost zone that gives you less chance than those who can spend more.

Fae was a perfectly good player who had problems with his attitude and illness. We made the fee back on him.

Cissé wasn't good enough for the top flight, but he still performed well for us, played a big role in our promotion push, and was sold for a profit.

im guessing man utds scouting network is up there with the very best in the world
and yet they still bought djemba djemba, veron, bellion, bebe, forlan, poborsky, prunier, taibi, jordi cruyff, obertan, kleberson and roy carroll
and they were all shit at utd.

sometimes, scouts, and managers get it wrong
sometimes a very good player will fail at a club for myriad reasons

ill tell you what though im happy our list of failures only cost a tiny miniscule fraction of what theirs did

Seems a little bit of an odd comparison to me.. A club that big can afford to make mistakes, take risks and buy high. Its the cost of winning! For every mistake they make they can redeem themselves by affording to buy a better player as replacement. Its more difficult for small clubs to buy, sell and replace so it ends up costing us more (in terms of percentage of the clubs coffers.

no one can really just afford to throw away a hundred million pounds on shit players

but the main point was to show that the best scouting networks in the world, and the greatest managers make mistakes in scouting and player assessment, and sometimes gr8 players fail at a certain club.
which backs up my point about scouting being a percentage game, and that listing the failures from brians tenure isnt really teh best way of assessing his ability to assess player.
so actually its the perfect comparison to make

but thanks for your attention anyway
