RoyalBlue You miss the point completely. By being paid by Sky (I'm assuming he didn't do it by free) at a time when he would normally be working for the club but for his injury, he is actually getting a financial bonus for being injured - an injury that is potentially costing the club dear.

Probably balances the bonuses he is missing out on as a result of being injured, so let's rub that argument out. It's also a pretty shabby line to suggest someone is using an injury to make a profit. He was injured playing for the club, and I rather suspect he's about a million times more frustrated at not being able to play than anyone else.

RoyalBlue There must have been plenty of things that he could have done for the club, his main employer, on a match day. So I guess I am blaming them for not making him work for them, as opposed to profiting from his absence due to injury by working for Sky.

He's paid to play football, I guess he could have smoozed round the hospitality areas but other than that I can;t see that there are loads of other thing she could have done. Unless you think he could have usefully been a car park steward or sold programmes ? It is usual for squad members who aren't playing to be at games (and to be honest I would expect it to be standard practice for all players to be at every game) but it's also hardly a big deal if one player is allowed to pursue existing interests. In fact I would suspect it was a clause in Robert's contract when he signed that he would be allowed to do media work when not required by the club for matches.

RoyalBlue As for the other point, even players playing for lower level teams at best earn very good money nowadays. Add to that signing fees from his moves etc. I would suggest that Roberts is never going to be struggling for money. If I was in his position I might just consider forgoing some of my income in those circumstances or maybe he is already doing so in the form of donations to causes he supports.

I suspect the Jason Roberts Foundation is supported by the wages of Jason Roberts. It's been fairly widely publicised at the club, he's got an MBE for the work he does. Rather than assuming the worst why not take the evidence in front of you that Roberts isn't a money grabbing con man ?

Unphased Royal If any of us on here were earning the money he earns, not one of you would give it up for being injured. Especially when you consider a footballers career is so short and they have to sort them selves out for life in just 20 odd years.

I have no issues with what JC has done/is doing, but I do have supreme beef with the thinking that somehow footballers are "entitled" to retire at 35.

There are plenty of other jobs that have a short "shelf-life"; they have to plan for a later career, why not footballers?

I think footballers are allowed to draw pensions at 35 (don't think this is the state pension, just the one they have self funded). If they have put the money away then what's wrong with them having access to it. Anyone who has earned enough by the time they are 35 to not need to work seems very fortunate ! If they haven't put enough away then obviously they will need to work and clubs now make sure players get a proper education behind them to allow that to happen. The academy at Reading is very strict on players education and will kick youngsters out who drop behind at school...

Love the bit in Morro's programme piece that Roberts won't even pay club fines unlike the other players. He must be like a god or summat.

Nope. I think if he does recover enough to come back that he's got very little to contribute any more. His time has been and gone, now it ought to time for the kids to get a go.

Every time this thread comes to the top, I read it as 'Jason Roberts nearly black', and I think, 'No, he's all the way'.

I agree I'd rather see Ugwu given a go, but at the same time I don't think you can say Roberts wouldn't be useful. His game wasn't about pace when he first arrived. It was his ability to hold the ball up, and his sly way of selling a foul to the ref and getting us free-kicks. If not for that hip, he would still do a job for us, but he wont make a full comeback and he knows it; he's simply towing the line to justify extending his deal and pocketing a tidy pension.

If he sees out his contract he misses out on an insurance payout. I would have thought his best option would have been to retire on medical grounds and get a sizeable cheque. Only reason for him to not do that would be because he thinks he has a chance of playing (or his injury isn;t bad enough, or he forgot to keep up the insurance payments)

If he gets fit and really wants to play, why the hell would anyone not want him in the team? Pog seems to have turned over a new leaf and if he starts firing, with Roberts, Le Fondre and Sharp we will have a bloody good front line to choose from.

Arnie_Pie Pog seems to have turned over a new leaf

Steady on! Against Brighton you lot were ripping in to him and wanting to get shot. Now he's scored a couple of goals in one game, he's suddenly the bees knees. I love how fickle fans change their minds every 5 minutes.

Some, not all. And not me.

His turn in form has coincided with his 'clear the air' talk with Adkins. I believe he was a little dissolusioned before and whatver was said, he has been much improved, even against Brighton before he got sent off.

Whether he wants to stay or has realised he needs to get in the shop window for January is no concern, as long as he keeps scoring I don't care.

I know the general consensus on here is that he'll never play again and I pretty much share this view, but find it strange that the club is acting as if JR doesn't even exist. No noises out of them for a long time or have I missed something. Also, why don't the journos at Radio Berkshire ever ask about him? Or once again have I missed something?

Because unlike the team board, they're tired of talking about the same things incessantly?

Yes, but the last official line we heard was that he was training and would be fit soon ... then it suddenly became he's still a long way off and then nada.
