melonhead no one can really just afford to throw away a hundred million pounds on shit players

but the main point was to show that the best scouting networks in the world, and the greatest managers make mistakes in scouting and player assessment, and sometimes gr8 players fail at a certain club.
which backs up my point about scouting being a percentage game, and that listing the failures from brians tenure isnt really teh best way of assessing his ability to assess player.
so actually its the perfect comparison to make

but thanks for your attention anyway

Whats the best way of assessing Brians ability to assess players then? Only look at his successes?

Tottenham spent 80 million on useless players a few seasons ago and they seemed to afford it.. Funny this is in a David Bently thread when they spent 15 million on him that season

My main point was that the smaller the club the less room for failure. If it is indeed a percentage game then small clubs must make sure that their percentage of failure is much much lower. Take Liverpool for example. They made terrible and expensive transfers a few seasons ago but are now on the path to rectifying it with very little hangover left. They still attract big name signings etc.

What failure percentage would you say is a good one for a chief scout to have then? Seeing as you are failing to address my point that the percentage changes with the spending power of the club.

I don't see how just because "scouting is a numbers game" comparing Man utd failures is a perfect comparison to our failures. They spent more money in one season than we have spent since 2000.. In 2009 they earned nearly 3 times more in player sales than we have since 2000... A club like that cannot simply put scouting success down to a percentage as they operate with such high budgets the percentage would not accurately show their success rate! They can spend 3.5 million on Djemba Djemba without it affecting them as much as us spending 100k on a player would. Depending on how you plan to calculate these percentages us signing someone for 100k could equate to them spending 13 million on a player..

For them the percentage of success would probably be lower than ours because they have made more signings at higher prices but that does not mean that their scouting network has performed worse than ours as they have also bought in quality players. How can you compare two vastly different clubs with the same set of rules?

im not the one questioning brians record based on a list of failures, you were tbf
you look it up and get back to me.

my post wasnt about man utd per se
it was an example that even with huge money and a gr8 network they made mistakes.
therefore just listing failures isnt a good way to get at the facts for any club

im not comparing failures- im using it as an example why just looking at either failures, or successes is a shit way of doing it
but you carry on if you want to. im not really bothered

I never questioned Brians record based on a list of failures.. I think he was a massive success and his rights outshone his wrongs by a long ways.. I just thought your method of deducing success makes zero sense

Elm Park Pasty
specialjon So the chief scout had nothing to do with those signings?

I have a funny feeling that this has reared it's head before. and that someone said Doyle and Long were a recommendation from Dolan, rather than being someone BMc (or anyone else at the club) found themselves. Certainly, whichever way you look at it, BMc's finds subsequent to that golden patch were patchy. After all, if he 'spotted' Doyle and Long (which as stated I am pretty certain he didn't) then he also spotted Fae and Cisse within a similar time frame.

Anyway, back on subject. Have always thought Bentley was a bit of a kn*b but would be worth a 3 month contract to see if he has still got any desire (with the proviso that there is an automatic upgrade until end of season if we want him to stay, no point in him playing his socks off and then going back to the PL in January).

Wash your mouth out... Cisse was boss.

then i apologise for confusing you with the idiot who did
but im still right, the percentage of successes for any scout, while also taking into account the money available is the only way to assess a scouts success or not

:D :D :D
youve been arguing with me saying listing failures wasnt th ebest way to assess a scout
and thats not what i said at all either, in fact i said exactly teh opposite

and of course you should assess him based on the club he is at, and the level they are at, and the money they have to spend. thought it went without saying tbf

i only used untited as an example of why listing failures gives a slanted picture. your refusal to understand that is what has caused this mess in the first place, which i already told you about 5 times

so maybe we both need to take long hard looks at ourselves
i know you should

It wouldn't matter if his name was David Ford, we won't be signing him.

I used to know David Ford's son. David now owns a bar and a sports shop in Sheffield.
