£500 - Reading to make Play-Offs

by norwichfan » 01 Oct 2013 08:05

Had a £500 bet that Reading would make the Play-Offs two weeks before the start of the season at a price of 11/10.

I was looking for a team with a realistic aims of automatic promotion that had the following:

* A good proven manager in the lower leagues
* A solid goal-keeper
* A solid defence
* A stable board that are willing to invest if needed
* A 20-25 goals striker

From the outside looking in Reading appeared to tick four of these boxes and at the time I was expecting you to release Pog------ and sign a proven champ striker which didn't obviously happen.

Two questions...

1. Any suggestion you will sign a striker either on-loan or in the January window?
2. How are you looking this year in general?

You haven't mentioned it, so not sure if you know, but we have Billy Sharp on loan until January: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24187835. I do kind of still worry where the goals will come from though, Pog got two away at Derby and has started to look a bit rejuvenated. Alf should get a few, but he's definitely more suited to coming off the bench and nicking one late on. Jury is still out on Sharp, he hasn't played for us, but obviously he is proven in his league.

In terms of how we're looking, I think every game we play we seem to look a little more comfortable / gelled as a team. Defence seem to be doing pretty well (conceded 1 goal in 5 games, after the horror show 6 in one anyway).

I'd be amazed if Reading didn't make the play-offs.

Jeez! What do they teach kids in school these days?

One of the first things we were taught in A Level Maths was betting odds!

Does the bet win if we finish top two?

i.e. "to make the playoffs" means finish top 6 or positions 3-6?

As long as you didn't bet on us winning them I think you'll be fine.

Is your bet AT LEAST the play-offs?

We seem reasonably placed to have a possibility of finishing in the top two..

Didn't see you signed Billy Sharp, so thanks for that.

To clarify, the bet is for Reading to finish in the top 6.

For the purposes of the bet, it's irrelevant whether you finish 1st or 6th.

Hello and welcome...

1. Signed Billy Sharp as others have mentioned - I think we might bring another striker in during the window, but to be honest if Pogrebnyak continues his form for the last couple of games then we're looking very strong in that area with Le Fondre banging goals in for fun as well in addition to Sharp.

2. Improving with every game - it was always going to take time to change the playing style for the better and now we are seeing the results where we're retaining the ball which takes pressure off our defence - therefore we've kept 4 clean sheets in 5 games and scored goals along the way as we're creating a lot more. Very encouraged by Adkins and I'd be dumbfounded if we didn't finish in the top 6.

Isn't this the sort of thing you might have wanted to establish before placing a bet?

And who goes on a separate team's forum just to brag about having £500 to blow?

Maybe we should all pick a team at random, then go onto that team's forum and brag about putting £500 on said team to finish top 6. We'll post the hiLOLarious responses here. Best response gets a prize.
