creative_username_1 LOL @ anyone thinking smoking and being a first rate athletic sportsman can go together

David Ginola used to smoke 20 odd a day when he was at the top of his game

and he won what exactly....that's right pretty much fcuk all. Two players chosen from nearly 20 years ago

EDIT: In 2008 Ginola received a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge for a rosé wine produced at his vineyard in Provence

What has "winning" things got to do with anything?!

You said "first rate athletic sportsman" - which Ginola was

I think it's fair to say if you are paying someone £100k+ a week to be in peak physical consition it's reasonable to expect them not to smoke.

I think not winning anything and clearly not making the most of his exceptional talent would dump him down from the very top tier. There are going to be exceptions but you're on thin ice saying it would be fine for all footballers.

I thought British football had got over its "BOOO to sports science and nutrition" nonsense.

I think it's fair to say if you are paying someone £100k+ a week to be in peak physical consition it's reasonable to expect them not to smoke.

I'd go as far to say that the diet will have to be involved in this as well. Most clubs will be on it already. I'd imagine it might even be mentioned in contracts now.

Apparently Ashley Cole uses one of the outbuildings at Cobham as a private smoking den.

was gonna change my post to cover all the angle but couldnae be arsed.

those that smoke in a tiny minority....they are reducing their physical fitness by smoking

if it improved performance they'd start em on the tabs in the academies

smokers = pcunts

5live and Sky Sports were announcing it as a "great strike" yesterday...? It was one of the luckiest goals I've seen so far this season. Big deflection.

In fairness to them it did look like it had gone straight in on first viewing.

Much more :| :| was Alan Green (i think) saying he'd never heard of Gnabry when he saw him on yesterdays team sheet. This, the Gnabry who scored against Swansea last week. Do your oxf*rd homework.

Zidane, Cruyff and no doubt Maradona too.

3 of the greatest footballer ever. Smokers.

You can add in the likes of Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves too, although they come from a less fitness based era admittedly. Suffice to say smoking a few isn't going to stop you being a top player.

I saw the deflection on first viewing on the TV - perhaps they had a different view at the ground.

I didn't see it until the replay....

Thought it was a cracking goal, actually it still was if you include the build up/movement

Not denying that, they were calling it a "great strike" though. But I definitely saw a deflection first time and it looked to be heading straight at the keeper if it weren't for the deflection. It was lucky.

I thought Wilshere was hopeless in the first half-too often caught in possession, too often falling over and too often playing wayward passes and it looked likely he would be substituted.
In fairness to him he was much better in the second and, although the goal was a bit jammy, for a smoker he showed more energy than most of the (probably) non-smokers on the pitch.
Also I agree with Foxy about sanctimonious reporting by the Press and by some on here.
It's Wilshere's problem that he could well suffer in later life but for the next few years it won't affect what he does on the pitch so it has f*** all to do with anybody else.

VM - you appear to be insistent that smoking will have no effect on his performance, which is utter nonsence.

It is entirely possible for him to be a smoker and still be a top level pro, but to say his performances wouldn't be affected is laughable.

Smoking reduces VO2 Max, which in turn reduces the capacity for exercise before lactate threshold is reached.
