jd82 Paul Bodin v Wolves 1997

Gareth Davies was at the centre of a bizarre incident on his Elm Park debut.

The Reading new boy appeared to take a swing at Wolves striker Robbie Keane. But referee Steve Bennett red-carded team-mate Paul Bodin.

Keane was felled by Davies but Bennett waved play on. Davies, obviously riled at what he saw to be play-acting, playfully cuffed the Wolves man, who rolled on the ground in apparent agony.

After consulting his linesman the ref dismissed Bodin, who hadn't even been close to the incident.

The referee said: "I will send my report to the FA and a copy goes to Reading. They are free to make a complaint if they wish."

Edit - was 97

Yes clearly remember this. The strangest thing about the whole incident was Reading's decision not to appeal against the sending off. Even though Davies was clearly the "offender" and I believe the T.V. cameras were there as well and it was all caught on film. Bullivant obviously didn't want Davies to get in trouble and preferred to lose Bodin for 3 matches. We all know Bodin was crap by the time he reached Elm Park but still very shabby treatment.

Platypuss Colin Bailie, right in front of the Southbank. Everyone could see it coming miles out.

9165 Anybody else remember the `great` Bob Hazell against Barnsley, 1986 I think ?

Got a feeling it was a against Rotherham (could be wrong). Seem to recall that Terry Hurlock should have gone a few minutes later. We ended up winning 2-1 :D

Hurlock is this game was quiet comical esp after hicks' injury and then tait in one game (can't remember who against, think Mansfield) when you knew after early yellow he would be walking early . Was in tile hurst road end watching hazel flatten the other futcher boy

The fa cup game against wealdstone was also great, a v jones two footed hicks (again, always hicks) peters then decked someone and burvill and two of theirs got sent off, peters and vinny jones stayed on pitch

Robbie Keane was about 18 at the time and something of an up and coming "star". Davies had put a crunching tackle on him and whilst he was sitting on the floor as play moved to the other end of the pitch, Davies ran past him and sort of ruffled his hair. Keane throws himself to the ground clutching his face. The linesman had no idea as he was running away from the incident, Bodin gets sent off because he was ginger. How we laughed. Bodin really was shit, but he was in good company in that team bless him.

This got to be the best sending off I remember. The Southbank was too busy pissing itself laughing because sending Bodin off would most likely improve our performance, with him being the worst left back ever to wear the hoops. The players stayed quiet, the manager stayed quiet, everyone knew it was the best move for us, and that's what made it so funny!!. Fantastic!

What about when Adie did a great save to push the ball over the bar when on the line against Orient 93? Red card Shaka saved the pen and we won 2-1.

An interesting thread mainly because it got me thinking about how few sendings off I can remember. Have we generally been a pretty clean team or am I imagining it?

In recent years we've been a pretty clean, as our disciplinary record bears out, but in the late 80's, with the likes of Hurlock, Tait, Peters and Whitehurst in the team at various stages, we always seemed to have at least 1 player in the team who liked assaulting opposition players for the fun of it.
