That's shocking and lots of it makes me feel headmasterly: it wold be nice to get some of the authors to explain what they mean by some of their questions.

I'm interested in the best way to respond to such nonsense. Calling any of the nastier ones racist would clearly be the wrong thing to do, as that is probably the response they are asking for. Doing that just leads to a discussion of whether offence was caused, and leads to lots of self-righteousness and claims of hypocrisy (somebody on another thread started a rant with the words, "How dare Jason Roberts" for example). Racism is a serious issue that results in ruined lives, serious injury, death and poor job prospects. These twitter questions are just small inconsequential people trying to make a point, and failing miserably to be coherent or funny. I hope that a few of them had a very poor night's sleep, but they are perfectly capable of putting things right by not being such fools in the future.
